Hi All...I needed to update my ailing 2012 MBP so purchased a used 2014 2.8 i7 MBP...there is a 30 dat return option. The condition looks good and as described, but it turned up and the serial says 'unavailable'...however there is a serial on the sticker of the box which appears to work when put into the apple warranty page...whether or not it is the serial for this machine I don't know. The seller appears legit-ish (he shipped it with a full adobe suite and pro apps)...and sells a lot of other Macs on Ebay.

The seller says it may be due to some weird OS update issue that the serial has gone, and according to Apple the serial can go due to hardware update/changes....

Does anyone have any thoughts about this, if the machine loosk and works well, to keep or not to keep? My concern is the value should I choose to sell, will be less without a serial...even tho the warranty has expired (which I understand is the main purpose of the serial)...

Thanks!

Return it and get your money back. Plenty of other used systems without this issue. The serial number is key for getting work done on the system or to qualify for any warranty programs.

thanks...to clarify, I already purchased it for quite a good deal £770 for a 2014 MBP 2.8ghz 16gb ram 1tb drive...it was partially because it had a staingate screen which I will clean...

...but if its def a bad idea / dodgy for the future - I will return it with the 30 day policy...

EDIT: I just saw that the serial number on the box is the same as the serial number on the base of the MBP...so that adds a bit of credance to the situation, although it doesnt have the serial in software...

I had similar problem in MBP with serial number on the past, you can book appointment to Apple Store and they will "repair" serial number for you

I'd say return it. The preinstalled expensive Adobe software is another red flag IMHO.

The logic board on that machine was probably swapped out and not by Apple. When Apple swaps out a logic board, they burn the original serial number or a new one to the firmware. Also, any software such as the Adobe suite on the machine is illegal software unless the seller transfers it to you including any discs and registration number. As has already been stated, return the machine and get your £770 back.
