Hello guys!

Someone in my city is selling a Macbook Pro 14inch M1 for a really good price for a brand new but he's saying that "These are company purchased new MDM machines". Upon inquiring he said its some sort of notification that appears on screen. I have no idea whether its something to consider serious or can the notification be bypassed/ removed? Is it possible that the device is stolen? I have seen some videos on youtube on bypassing MDM but I am not sure the viability of those videos as I can not find followed up relevant comments.

I want to know if I should really consider buying? Where I live there is no official apple store and apple products are hugely expensive so going retail is not an option for me at the moment.

Happy new year!

Even though there have been hacks to bypass, which not all are successful, the hacked Mac (or iPhone, etc) is ultimately crippled anyway.

Of course, that’s in addition to the likelihood these Macs were probably illegitimately acquired.

Basically, as others have said, avoid.

Thanks for reply. I remember the seller told me its just a message that I can skip by clicking OK and everything should work smoothly. Is it possible that these are just legally bought company purchased MDM machines that just seems to have notification and just work without issues if they aren't stolen?

So it’s definitely not new then and if it has MDM it belongs to a company. Would stay far away as it could be rendered useless or reported stolen I imagine.

Thanks for reply. The seller claimed they aren't stolen and legally purchased. He told me if they were stolen then you couldn't access the account but with his Macbook Pros I can access the account and connect to WIFI etc. Unfortunately I am still confused what this MDMs about? I know about apple activation lock but it seems different than MDM.

everything should work

Dude, don't you see the red flags that are waving wildly in your face?

If he unable to remove the MDM profile, then why would you want it? It sounds like he's giving you line of crap to get your money and once he has that, you'll never see/hear from him again and you're left with a Mac that has a MDM profile that could limit you. Are you sure its not stolen? I wouldn't take the seller's word for it

Intro to mobile device management profiles

It allows enterprises to control and manage their Macs, including level of security users can have, password requirements, locking and/or wiping a machine remotely.

Edit: My company uses MDM, so that users do not have admin rights, locking down the system, forcing password changes, and yes, remote wipes if its stolen

All good mate. I just wanted understand it. The link and the comment below helped me understand the risk well now and I am surely not going to buy from him.

Thanks again

These computers are obviously illegally acquired. They’re far too new for any company to be getting rid of them, so there is no legitimate reason for them to be getting sold while still enrolled in a company’s management system.
With macOS Ventura, there is now no longer any way to bypass the enrollment process– like an iPhone, the computer will require an internet connection to activate.

Fishrrman FEARLESS prediction:

Buy a MBP with MDM on it, and you are going to become a VERY unhappy buyer VERY soon afterwards.

Consider yourself as having been duly warned about such a purchase.

What more is there to say?
