    Hello,
Geohot just release his version version of unlock for the 3GS only purplesn0w. I would like to give it a try but I already have ultrasn0w installed. Can I remove it somehow ?

Uninstall ultrasn0w, install purplesn0w. There's an ulttrasn0w toggle for SBSettings, too. What difference does it make? An unlocked phone is an unlocked phone.

    Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

Well according to Geohot, the purplesn0w is not running a deamon process as opossed to ultrasnow. Hence less battery drain and so on.

So there is a major difference.

There is a major difference, in that purplesn0w patches some routines while ultrasn0w executes an extra process. However the process is executed only once and then becomes dormant and is never run again (presumably until reboot). See MuscleNerd's twitter at http://twitter.com/musclenerd : "interesting alternative to ultrasn0w but fyi it provides no battery savings. ultra "executes" only once, right after bb reset"

So, no difference in battery life between the two sn0ws at all.

I'm just about to try this though ... no need, just out of curiosity ;-) I'll got for purplesn0w seeing as purplera1n worked so well for me.

EDIT: no joy, not with my old 3 (UK) SIM. Just sits there alternating between "searching..." and one bar of signal (no carrier name displayed). And it made the phone sloooooowww. Uninstalled and going back to trusty O2. Maybe I'll try ultrasn0w later.

Update: after reading comments on geohot's blog here, it seems that the unlock will only work with 3G disabled - so disable 3G first before you do anything, like install purplesn0w.

EDIT: Whoops, couldn't download purplesn0w when 3G was off. So, I installed purplesn0w with 3G on, turned it off (using SBSettings but I guess you can probably do that in the usual way), turned off the phone, put in my 3 (UK) SIM, turned back on and... hey presto! One unlocked iPhone! Sadly the 2G signal on 3 is pants so the unlock is no good for me ATM, but it's good to see that it works. Hopefully geohot will address the 3G issue like he did with the purplera1n issues.

You will only be able to use purple sn0w if you have LEGIT ACTIVATED through AT&T.
Geohot has not add support to hacktivation yet...We said he'll be adding it soon!

Indeed, I had activated officially through O2.

Another update on purplesn0w: I rebooted with my O2 SIM in and re-enabled 3G, with purplesn0w still installed. As soon as I did that the phone returned to being slooooooooowwwwww with a crap signal. Moral of this story is, purplesn0w does not work with 3G enabled even with official SIM. Keep that 3G off, or wait for an update.

EDIT: forgot to mention - disabled 3G (eventually - tough on such a sloooowwww phone), rebooted, uninstalled purplesn0w through Cydia, rebooted and all is fine with 3G now with official O2 SIM. Phew!

I don't get this at all. Is geohot rivaling the dev team?

It seems that way. Geohot developed and released purplera1n jailbreak as the dev team was not going to release theirs. Then, the dev team released their jailbreak and unlock. Geohot then carried on and released his own unlock. Guess he's trying to make a name for himself. In my view, he has ;)

Competition only makes things better. I love what Geohot is doing, because of him I now have Cydia and all my JB apps on my 3GS. If it were up to the dev team, I'd still be waiting for 3.1.

Hey, I'm uk so we don't get CNN!

Also, double good news as 1) geohot is working on a 3G fix and 2) I've finally found a use for the iPhone cut & paste feature! From Twitter:

"hopefully I'll fix 3G issues tonight"

    XD

    Forgive my novice question but

If I jailbroke with purplera1n, would it be better if I rejailbreak using purple sn0w? I am on AT&T if that matters.

Purplesn0w updated! RC2 version available through Cydia.

New version supports 3G - i.e. the network, not the phone! Still only for iPhone 3GS. More info >>here<<.

I installed it in the UK with my O2 SIM, 3G enabled. Turned off phone, installed 3 (i.e. the network Three) SIM, now all good with that on 3G - can make calls, send & receive texts and all that.

Also, O2 SIM now back in and all works with that too. It's apparently not necessary to restart when installing purplesn0w, haven't tried that though as I always turn off cwhen changing SIM.

Unfortunately, shortly after reinstalling the O2 SIM I got a call from Carphone Warehouse customer service with a hard sell on insurance, and took many insistances that I didn't want it before they eventually buggered off. Perhaps a side-effect of purplesn0w ;)
