They also considered basing it on Linux, which is what Android is built around.

i think it was in the Steve Jobs book he cites they were trying w/ the iPod OS and OS X but that OS X won out. i couldn't find anything cited about Linux, but John Gruber has a source who seems to back that up:

Somebody got ripped off. Does this prototype even function?

you miss the point of a collector item. hint: it isn't to make phone calls.

Because, you know, Darwin is not based on Linux or anything like that :roll eyes:

Darwin is in no way based on Linux. Linux and Darwin are each POSIX-compliant operating systems based on two different kernels.

It's not. It's based ultimately on UNIX. Linux is based on UNIX, but that does not mean that iOS is based on Linux.

this. i dont understand how enthusiasts on an uber-geek website like MR would not understand this concept.

most Linux distros (aside from BSD, obviously) are derived from the AT&T branch of the family tree...

Please don't embarrass yourself further. If obvious you that understand nothing about LINUX.

Roll your eyes all you want, you don't know what you're talking about. LINUX is not based on UNIX. 2 completely different operating systems.

My mum still uses the first iPhone. It's in mint condition because she has this thick case for it. She's never had a data plan. Only used it for talking this entire time lol

Wonder how much she'd get for it on eBay.

I love the icons. Cereal box for serial? Keyboard cat?

That's just awesome, and it's awesome to know that human beings designed and worked on these products (rather then "Designed by Apple in Cupertino"- I cringe every time I see that, because it's such a lifeless statement).

It says California, not Cupertino.

Did Apple really think about "Touch ID" back with the original iPhone? Look at the fingerprint icon with Touch with the name.

its probably just a diagnostic program that shows the screen touches or adjusts sensitivity. Nothing special just a standard touchscreen testing program.

Since it was an item never intended for sale, it is considered stolen property and Apple still is the rightful owner of it.

Apple has the legal right to swoop in if they want and reclaim it at any time... and occasionally have in the past on such items.

Not a problem at all. He can just take it to the UK and auction it there, along with all of the antiques robbed from Egypt and China.

Anyone notice the X in the background on the Wifi, Bluetooth and Battery?
Looks kind of fishy to me.

I want the iPhone that Steve used in the first iPhone announcement.

The one that was tethered :)

There were actually multiple such units on stage.

At the time of the first public demo, the devices were still quite unstable and would run out of memory, so it was planned out that if one crashed, Jobs would simply pick up another fresh one that was ready to go.

They were so worried, they hardcoded five bars on the signal status, even though they had a dedicated AT&T tower nearby.

The nervous engineers in the the front rows said they had a flask of whiskey, and each time a section of the demo finished without crashing, they all took a swig. By the end, they were drunk :)

Oh yeah... I know the story :)

I just think it would be cool to have one of the iPhones with the "special board" inside that they used to enable video-out to the projectors at the announcement.

Those are definitely a part of history :D

its a possibility,

back in the mid 00's, there was this huge play by Microsoft and a few other companies for fingerprint biometric scanners for computers. some Laptops had them built in, Microsoft was even selling a stand alone USB unit at some point in the past.

never really caught on. it was glitchy at times and didnt work for everyone. Not sure if anyone is still really doing it. (aside from Apple's 5s)

but that was probably just diagnostic software for the touch panel

I think you mean iOS, OSX, Linux and Android are all based on "Unix". Android is not based on Linux exactly, although they have many similarities.
