I remember when the 3G was announced, Jobs spoke about 3rd party apps being able to utilise mobileme 'push' as an alternative to having apps in memory.

Is this functionality in the developers' SDK yet? If so, I'm yet to see an implementation.

I thought that something such as this would be ideal for IM/social networking apps. Have Apple delivered, or is it a failure by developers to use this functionality?

I doubt I'll be subscribing to mobileme, because I won't use its features and don't want to change my 'cloud' provider from Google at the moment. However, if it enabled 'push' capabilities for 3rd party apps, and there were good implementations out there, I might just change my mind..

Any ideas?

The push functionality you're talking about is for apps like Instant Messenger clients. As Jobs mentioned, it's not going to roll out until September.
It has nothing to do with MobileMe.

Google has no 'cloud'.
