You could just set up your Gmail as push, so as soon as you get an SMS it 'dings' with a new email. That's how I have it set up on my iPhone.

'Push' and 'Fetch' are two different things.

When an email is 'pushed', as soon as it hits your inbox it appears on your computer, iPad, iPhone, whatever, at the same time.

Fetch only checks your email at intervals, whether it be 15, 30, 60 minutes.

Gmail as an exchange acct on iPhone/iPad is effectively push. Gmail as gmail is not.
