Well im fairly certain it makes almost no difference whether I have mail set to push or fetch - so its set at push now...

I base that on almost completely GPRS/Edge use as I dont get much 3G coverage where I spend my time which is annoying, but on the plus side leaving the phone set to 3G in these circumstances seems to be fine too. I will update this when and if I spend any length of time in a 3G area and notice a difference.

I suspect my initial bad battery life problems were for 3 reasons :-

1. GPS - I couldnt resist playing with this, maybe with Maps in the background it was still running - not sure at the moment, but when finishing with maps I hold the home button down a lot longer - 5 seconds - to kill it off completely rather than just go back to home.

2. Lack of battery conditioning, since running the Battery through a few cycles I feel it is generally a lot better - I was watching an iPlayer video last night with brightness turned up full to try and wear the battery out - i ended up with about 17 hour between charges and 6 hours use (at least 2 on wifi) and still couldnt get the 20% warning last night.

3. Backlight set over 50% and auto brightness adjust on. I simply dont need it that bright, 25% and manual is enough for most situations, especially in dull grey england..

In short, battery life is always going to vary, and every now and then I might run out but I suspect that will be rare, so Im not going to worry about it.

same here - I made the observation that switching from fetch to push only gives me 10% more battery life at the end of the day - really not worth doing without push then.
