Mac OS was designed to be simple to use. To that end, they hid less important functions in contextual menus for those who needed to access them. It is Microsoft who made everything require right-clicks to get at the most basic of functionality.

LOL...

I must say you can always spot true Mac fanboy when they defend the 1 button mouse.

Who needs it right? I just wanted to necro this thread because I was so impressed by the logic here! Even better is the rationalization for right sided icons... classic. Way to go Jobians!

Is there a way to do this? I prefer the dock on the right side of the screen but it overlaps the desktop icons. How do I move the icons to the left?

I found a way to do this thats a bit better than just dragging all the icons to the other side or using the snap to grid option.

If you change the alignment to "none" you will see the option to "clean up" the desktop, this will arrange all the desktop icons in some what complete groups based on their names (at least this is what I have found it to do), but the groups are on both sides of the screen. From there you can drag the icons anywhere and press clean up again and it will snap all the icons to the grid square closest to them.

This lets you have neatly organized columns or rows of icons anywhere on the desktop without the "snap to grid" option decimating their order. It only worked for me when the icon names were on the right instead of the bottom, an option available under "show view options".

The "clean up" option did seem a bit random which isn't great, but hopefully you can get it to work!

Hmm. Guess I'll have to try that. How does it snap to the nearest grid the second time when it's still set to "none"? Are your first changing it back to grid?

I think part of the "clean up" option is snapping it to the grid, so you just have to keep clicking clean up after you move the icon close to where you want it
