I just got the Chocolate as well, except I bought the package with the USB cable, CD and headphones. I don't plan on putting many songs on, just a few for ringtones, so I didnt need the extra space. The guy told me I could use them as ringtones, no problem. (he also told me AAC music was no problem  )
Anyways, wasn't about to give up. I looked on Google, found a forum asking the same thing. I found this.
You need windows for the software, at least he BitPim part, not so sure about Audacity on the Mac, never used it but I think it's available.
Anyways, I got two songs I like converted into mp3 clips and onto my phone, no problem. Whether you want to use them for ringtones, or just music, I'd say go get the cable, you're going to need it IMO. And if you're just transferring music, then just use the software they give you. I had to download wma's cause the idiots lied and said any music would work. Verizon is forcing me to illegally download music since I can't use my purchased music.

Anyways, I've been through this, so any questions just PM me.

BitPim works on Macs, I use the OS X version all the time. It works great!

Audacity is a free Windows-only program for manipulating audio files, you can easily use a Mac's included software to do it.

How!??!

I have been helping 50+ yr. old friend of mine hack her Verizon LG phone to play imported mp3's and I actually got it to work.. but the next time she took it into the store they gave her a "firmware update" (that they claim was "absolutely necessary") which completely removed her mp3 player and patched the hack I found.

Vicious.

How did you get the thing to play mp3s? And were you on a mac? I have a chocolate and a mac = total incompatability. I was told by a Verizon sales guy that I could still drag music onto the phone, just without the pretty programs. I've tried a couple of things and can't even get the phone to appear on my desktop. Any suggestions?

OK here's the scoop:

Putting the MicroSD in the phone will result in it being formatted immediately (if it's the first time it's been in the phone). It will automatically make "my_music", "my_pix", "my_flix", etc folders. Simply drag and drop music (wma's only) into the my_music folder and voila!

So, question.. How do I hack this thing to play MP3's? My entire collection is MP3 format! Can anyone help me out with this?

man that totally sucks. i was going to ask for the chocolate phone for christmas thinking i could "plug and play" i am not going to make my parents buy the "software kit". stupid verizon

Well, I have an interesting update for ya.

Not only was transferring the files to the phone a piece of cake (just used a card reader), but it turns out, it plays MP3 files just fine. We've got tons of WMA and MP3 files on our phone now, all working perfectly.

They told us at the Verizon store that, not only could you NOT just transfer files over without the software, but that the phone would NOT play MP3's.

Lies.

Nothing was involved. I put the MP3's on the MicroSD card just like I did the WMA's. Both played excellently. :)

can't you put music on the chocolate at no charge w/ card and card reader?

i read in another forum that you can use a card reader to put music files on the micro sd card and then put the card into the chocolate and access the music. supposedly since you don't sync the music with windows media player or download w/ vcast verizon doesn't detect them so you don't get charged for the songs. Has anyone else done this or heard of it? i have a micro sd card and a card reader but don't want to load it up with songs and put it in my chocolate if i'm going to get charged for them later. not to sound scandalous but i don't exactly want to pay hundreds of dollars to fill my phone with songs.

You do not get charged for ANY of your own songs you put on the phone, whether you put them on yourself or sync them through Windows Media Player. You will not get charged anything for putting your own songs on there. If Verizon did such a thing, they'd be dead about now.

I'm sorry if I'm bring about a "dead thread", but I too bought a Chocolate about Christmas. I use my printer as a card reader, but my printer doesn't have a slot for Micro SD, just for SD. Any way I can still get songs onto my phone?

Certainly; just get an adaptor. It'll be the size of a standard SD card but you can slot the Micro SD into it. It will read it as if it is a "normal" one.
SanDisk Micro SD cards include the adaptor in the packets.

Holy crap! I am super excited now :D I was really down because I bought the stupid Music Kit and the cable wasn't recognized >_> It said it wasn't plugged in when it was. And I never got it to work so just returned it. But now I am so going to buy the Mini SD Card and a USB SD Card Reader (my computer doesn't have a slot for SD cards). Thanks for letting us know about this :D

Easiest way is to just get a card reader. Everything else is just a waste of time and impractical. . .

Or

You can install windows and use Verizon's software.

Your choice.

DO NOT BUY MEMORY CARDS FROM VERIZON.
Or any mobile carrier, for that matter.

Go to an electronics retailer like Newegg.com and buy a micro SD card from them. Very cheap, and comes with an adapter.

Also the included software is useless even on Windows. It doesn't work and you don't need it.

Yeah I realized this yesterday. They are really expensive from Verizon!!

Woot! I bought a SanDisk 2GB MicroSD/TransFlash Card with SD Adapter + a
DMS 6-in-1 USB 2.0 High Speed Memory Card Reader Writer for SD SDHC MiniSD MiniSDHC MMC rsMMC for only $27.80 with shipping! (The shipping was like $13 O_O)

Compare that to the $40 the 2GB MicroSD Card costs from Verizon.

Now I have a bunch of music on my Chocolate and I can put pictures/videos from my phone on the computer and view pictures on my Wii, woot :D They look really nice for a 1.3 Mega Pixel camera.
