Putting the date on the menu bar

I have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to put the date on the menu bar next to the time on my MacBook Pro (late 2011).

I've done it before, though I can't remember how!

I know it's not rocket science. Please help.

Click the time, then:
Date & Time Preferences->Clock->Show date
