I’m so annoyed that I can’t put my own audiobooks on the watch.
I bought the LTE model to be able to leave my phone at home. But at the moment you can only sync your Apple audiobooks. I have a lot of audiobooks that Apple doesn’t sell, including old podcasts converted to audiobooks. Why in God’s name do they cripple the app like this?

ive read that you can change your audiobooks to “music” and sync them that way but then I still have to remember which chapter I was on.

Audible lets you do this. I hope Apple will too. And if anyone knows something I don’t - please help me :)

Yes and no. Say you have a book consisting of thirty files (chapters), each 30 minutes long. I would remember the position in the file, but you would still have to remember what file/chapter you were listening to.

I merge my books into one big mp3 with mergemp3 and tell iTunes to remember position. I wonder if that’s a workaround

I think that could work. Unfortunately that removes any chapter information as there is only one big file. I personally also have the problem that some of my audiobooks are converted podcasts and I would loose dates and titles and so on.

If you use the Overcast app, it allows manual uploads that can then be synced to the watch. I use it for all audiobooks, after converting them to as few files as possible with Audiobook Builder on the mac. If its multiple files, just create a playlist and it will work as well. I'm a believer that Overcast is the best audiobook player on iOS without even trying to be. Smart Speed is fantastic for audiobooks.

The other way would be creating an RSS feed of that book and adding it to Outcast - that would require a bit more work

Could one do that from Google Drive? And the other way with an upload to Overcast probably works. They just can't be more than 4 hours long.

I was not aware of the 4-hour limit on Overcast. I should probably start splitting my audiobooks into smaller chunks. I usually use the maximum limit on Audiobook Builder, which is 12 hours, and use chapters inside that. Is the 4-hour limit just for syncing to the watch, since I know I have audiobooks uploaded to Overcast that are far longer.

Yes, it's just for uploading on the watch I found out. It's a little annoying, since Overcast sorts the files from time of upload and not alphabetically, so there is some manual sorting afterwards.

You could probably do it with a playlist in the right order too. I used to do that with limited series podcasts that I wanted to autoplay in the right order instead of reverse chronological.

Yes, but you still have to manually sort them in the playlist, right? I have to anyway. I'm also looking at justcast.

That's an interesting service...I wonder if I could create a feed of an audiobook in it, and sync that with Overcast to still get Smart Speed, which I really want.

Okay, I've been using Justcast to make podcasts out of my audiobooks and then imported them to Overcast and on to the watch. It really works well, and I highly recommend Justcast. I've had excellent service and help when I had questions.

That's awesome...I need to try it. Do you pay for one of the plans or is 3 adequate? When done that way is there a 4 hour limit?

I pay for one of the plans as I like to have more than one book on the watch at a time so I haven’t tried the free version. I think the four hour problem persist as it is an Overcast limit.
