Or maybe some hunters came across the drowsy, fully-fed (and perfectly healthy) python, killed it, took its head as a trophy, and sliced it open to see what was in its belly? It just seems a little odd to me that the head was removed and is nowhere to be found...

A possibility or just a flight of fancy on my part?
