If you opt to have optimised for device images on your device, then load images into the various photo apps, are you editing the optimised image or not? If it's the optimised image then this I can see creating all sorts of issues where you think you're actually working on full resolution images.

Hopefully somone can clear this up.

As far as Apple has communicated, you are doing non-destructive edits a la Aperture, so the same edits take effect on any version of the photo you happen to have. When you export a full res version, the same edits apply.
