iPhone Q for Google Maps users (re: Location Access)

As I’m using Google Maps anyway, thought I would try it for a few months with “Allow Location Access” set to Always (why not let Google constantly track me in the name of science? lol). It was fun to play around with my daily “Timeline,” and ponder the impact of the add’l hours of background battery usage… but it never really did any of the things suggested in the explanation below. Am I missing something?
