Do you think Apple will release a application which will allow its user to rip DVDs (that they own) to their AppleTV instead of having user use other applications to do this?

I would pay a small charge for an official application from Apple which has all the correct settings for their products - which can be updated when newer products come along.

    Any thoughts?

Absolutely not, no. Converting a DVD to any other file format requires the CSS encryption present on practically all commercial DVDs to be stripped first. Though this process is a trivial one, it is illegal and for Apple to release an app that did such a thing would probably lead to their MPEG-2 license being yanked - meaning no DVD playback on any Mac, in addition to the likelihood they would get sued and would almost certainly lose. Besides, there's no need for an 'official' application - this process is a trivial one to accomplish, with bucketloads of software already existing to do just that. Handbrake (or Mediafork) can rip movies and TV shows straight from the disc to the desired format. I'd use those rather than hold out in vain hope for an app Apple is never going to release.
