Apple continued to see strong worldwide sales across its MacBook line-up in the third quarter of 2017, according to new market research conducted by TrendForce. Apple's laptop sales once again exceeded ASUS to rank fourth in global notebook shipments, which overall saw a "remarkable" quarterly increase of 6.8 percent and a year-on-year increase of 0.9 percent, reaching 42.69 million units.

Apple continued the strong shipments of 12-inch products in the second quarter, and focused on the new models of MacBook Pro in the third quarter, recording the third quarter shipments of 4.43 million units and an increase of 11.3%. It exceeded ASUS to rank the fourth in this third quarter.
HP recorded a new high in its quarterly shipments, which increased by 17.6 percent, reaching a single-season shipment of 11 million units for the first time. HP is expected to achieve the annual goal of 40 million units, which will secure its first place in 2017 global notebook shipments ranking.

Lenovo recovered somewhat from a poor first half of the year, recording 8.58 million units for third quarter shipments and a 6.5 percent quarterly growth. In the fourth quarter, it is estimated to have another 1 to 3 percent growth.

Dell shipped 665 million units in the third quarter with a quarter-on-quarter increase of 1.4 percent, maintaining its third place in the rankings. ASUS and Acer ranked fifth and sixth, shipping 3.82 million and 3.31 million units respectively.

During a recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple's Mac division set a new all-time revenue record of $25.8 billion for fiscal 2017. Apple sold 5.4 million Macs during the September quarter, up 10 percent over last year, and gained significant market share as the global market contracted by one percent, according to IDC's latest estimate. The performance was reportedly fueled by big demand for the MacBook Pro, said Cook, and Mac revenue grew 25 percent to a new September quarter record.

"We had outstanding results all around the world in each of our geographic segments, growing Mac revenue by 20 percent or more," said Cook. "We were also very happy with the success of Mac in the education market, where customer purchases grew double digits year over year."

I'm glad to hear the Mac is healthy, hopefully Apple continues to invest in this core part of their business. It is a shame however, for those of us hoping we'd see a few ports return to our Macs. Heck, even Magsafe would be such a welcome return. I'll use my 2015 MBP for as long as I can.

Cause of the price after my 2009 macbook pro died, I went to a cheap 1100 euro Lenovo, it drove me so mad over the course of 3 months I sold it and bought back a 13 inch macbook pro, with far lesser specs, yet it just feels great. And I couldnt live without final cut pro, and the mac terminal and ofc serveral other apple exclusive programs.

Im also pretty sure if it wasnt for the price, they would have a very very high market share, much higher then now. Price is still a big point for the majority of ppl to not go to mac.

This isn’t complicated....update your Macs and people will buy them. Pathetic how marginalized the Mac became the last few years, although it seems Apple is starting to right the ship. 2018 and 2019 should see some nice upgrades finally. Intel is a part of this also, and they also are finally releasing some performance improvements also.

Pretty bad for consumers, given the eye watering poor value for money due to their insanely high price.

Get ready for the Touch Bar complaint posts! It's pretty impressive for Apple.

Return the function bar, with a physical escape key and put the touchbar above that.

The touch bar is pretty awful with its lack of tactile feedback.

I hope that Apple update that 2015 15" MacBook Pro that they are still selling at a premium price despite having almost ancient CPU / GPU inside.

its crazy that apple is in the 4th place while deliver ONLY premium pretty expensive hardware with uncompromising approach while HP and all the other deliver stripped down products that probably are the majority of their annual sales

happy to know the mac is doing well, still waiting for the 5k thunderbolt 3 display ...

in my opinion the mac is THE Best personal computer by far, from hardware standpoint and by software standpoint, as a owner of the new 13 pro its a blast... also running boot camp alongside mac OS and i got the perfect laptop, the best mac OS machine and the best Windows machine.

a lot of people don't know that you can install windows in a mac via boot camp, not knowing that they can get far better hardware then a PC laptop with similar price tag as a mac...

I'm confused. HP shipped 40 million units for the year, and they're number one. Dell shipped 665 million units during the QUARTER and they're number three. How is that possible?

typo. Pretty sure that is supposed to be 6.65 million. To put that number in perspective, 665 million units would be the equivalent of 2-3 years of iPhone sales... in a quarter.

That's a bad news in reality, because this would confirm the criminal plan to rise prices without giving reasonable choices to customers.
Just to name a few examples:
- powerful machines with cheaper display for developers
- more ports
- gaming machines
- cheaper and bigger storage options
- picking size without compromises...

Hopefully those percentages are inflated by enterprises buying Macs to save on maintenance and licences, and non touchbar machines.

Again, its not all black and white. My Apple laptop is great for software development, but I have a PC beside me for some very good reasons - a mac cannot do what that windows machine can, due to lack of software / hardware. Also that PC was probably 2 or 3 times less expensive, yet, still more powerful than a Mac desktop.

EDIT: I see you've edited your post to "IMO the mac is" ..

I agree completely! I recently purchased the top of the line (at the time) 2015 MBP and it runs like a beast. And not to beat a dead horse, but I don’t find my need for USB going away anytime soon.

How is the battery life? Should I go with MBP 13inch 2017 without touchbar OR MBP 13inch 2015?

Many people know about boot camp, but there are other ways to run Windows on a Mac.
I am using a Citrix VDI desktop on my MBP and it works great too.

I've wondered for a while what I'll do if/when (knock on wood) my late 2013 13" rMBP gives up the ghost. I sometimes find myself wishing it had one more type-A USB port. With that as one of its few knocks, I can't see trading up to a computer with none. I constantly have a flush USB drive plugged in to back-up my files, and I'm also constantly using the second port to charge my iPhone, Fitbit, etc. And I still frequently use the SD card slot from my Canon camera. I guess I'm now the luddite. In fact, I'd still like to go back to a user-swappable battery. And even more of a fantasy would be to go back to how wonderfully easy it was to remove hard-drives in the non-retina 13" MBPs. Anytime my MBP stopped working, I could easily take the drive out and put it in an enclosure and get all my data off before sending it into Apple (which used to happen quite often with their faulty SATA cables). That's why I now keep a flash drive permanently plugged in to keep a mirror back-up. Now if something goes wrong on the computer, my data is at Apple's mercy during a repair unless I keep a constant backup.

Wow, good for Apple, but was not expecting this with the technical compromises they instituted on the latest Pro's (whether its loosing magsafe or the throttling of the CPU or whatever)....going for style over substance paid off handsomely.

That said, it also sounds like they are paying attention to the tech heads some as well so things will hopefully get nudged into the substance column in the future. But great results in the mean time.

You can repeat this same thing 5 and 10 years ago, nothing has changed. Macs were always more expensive, less ports, not gaming PC and never had cheaper storage upgrades. The reality hasn’t changed.

And most folks do like the new Macs, the majority of the complaints from the Internet forums aren’t the average feedback, they’re mostly negative by their nature. Positive feedback aren’t usually shared here.

I've heard of so many companies recently that allow employees to choose which laptop they want. Used to just get Dells. They now include Apple on that list, and most people choose Apple laptops.

That's probably true and I imagine the end state will be BYOD for laptops also.
