Seriously considering the freeNAS option.

Let me flip this question around - what are the downsides of doing freeNAS?

Other than power consumption, I guess.

This thread is helpful, as I'm looking at setting up a private cloud and Synology and QNAP are options I'm looking at. I'm also looking at OwnCloud and WD MyCloud. Question, how does WD MyCloud compare to QNAP/Synology? I've noticed nobody has even mentioned WD solutions.

Different ends of the scale. I'm sure they work but the device is limited in terms of functions/features - which may or may not be a problem.

The downside is that it involves more effort on your part for administration, however, that's not something you'll have to deal with once it's set up and running. I've had a FreeNAS box running for over two years, and other than having to swap some failed drives out, I don't do anything with it as far as administration.

To be honest, I don't see power consumption on a well set up FreeNAS server being significantly higher than on a similar sized NAS. Most of your juice is going to be for spinning drives, which will be the same for either box. Certainly the server will need more for a larger CPU, but I run mine headless so I don't have the overhead of a separate GPU.

Synology DS213 user here going on year 4 without issue or complaints. I have heard good things about UNRAID as an alternative to FreeNAS. Check it out if you're looking at software defined storage over an appliance:
