Lets dispell some myths here.

1. Will get thinner. Thats it. No wedge shape like the macbook air. Shape will be thinner but similar is my guess.

2. Quad core is a given. Why would they go dual core when the Quad core is 35W same as the dual core which is 35W. What would be the advantage? When the Quad core part which is a OEM only part is 'cheaper' than the dual core part.

The 13 MBP isn't going anywhere. The base MBP is their best seller. For the first calendar quarter of 2012, Apple sold roughly 3.1 million notebooks, with nearly half of them being the 13-inch MacBook Pro. Needless to say it isn't going anywhere. It will likely see better upgrades than the previous gen. due to the fact it is the company's best selling notebook.

Three more weeks. :)

Yeah I know what you mean, I guess Apple want you to spend more money to buy the 15" Macbook Pro, the 13" MBP is quite nice though as it is, quad core graphics would be nice but I don't see this happening ;(

I guess that's true that apple want me to buy a 15". The truth is I own a 15" and to carry around all day + books, or in a camera bag with a DSLR and 3 pro lenses and a flash it's just to heavy.

I need a laptop that has a great deal of power and graphics but is light and portable!

Do we know the pricing differential of the current Sandy Bridge DC cpu versus the announced Ivy Bridge QC cpu?

If there's not a significant price hike it makes sense to make the Pro lineup all QC.

As far as i know, there are no mobile dual core ivy bridge processors at this time (hoping they will take this opportunity to put a quad in the 13").

Here are the links for intels CPUs:

The high end 13" model has at $346:
http://ark.intel.com/products/53464/Intel-Core-i7-2640M-Processor-(4M-Cache-up-to-3_50-GHz)

The chip that may be in the new 13" at $378:
http://ark.intel.com/products/67356/Intel-Core-i7-3612QM-Processor-(6M-Cache-up-to-3_10-GHz)-rPGA

Both have a TDP of 35W.

This is all just speculation, but this could be an actually possibility. Hope that might shed some light on the topic. :)

I am not so sure about this. If they drop the optical drive and switch to a solid state drive, both of which they are planning to do according to the rumors, then there is almost no difference between a 13 inch air and 13 Pro. As for it being the best selling laptop that is true but if they eliminate it many people would just switch to the Air.

Thanks for doing the legwork. It makes total sense to go Quad as the price differential is minimal.

The 13 inch does not have quad core processing right now and upgradable ram is not a major buying feature for ordinary users.

More importantly, I do not think they will put a quad core processor in the 13 because then the only difference with the 15 inch will be a dedicated GPU which would be hard to justify for $400 more.

Yes it is important to many user.

Even if both the 13" and 15" had discrete graphics it would come down to what the customer wants. More portability or a larger screen. And the difference is $500 in the US.

Its 600 dollars more in the US, my typo earlier. I disagree with you about the ram. If we were to do a survey of all Mac users I would bet you that most do not even know what ram. I can't see the only difference between the 13 and 15 being a discreet GPU to justify a big (600) price premium.

LOL I had it wrong as well. I wonder if Apple really cares anymore about whether you're getting a 13 or a 15" so long as you're buying a Mac and hopping into their ecosystem.

They are a business whose only goal is to make money.
Did you see the recent news reports of how they avoid paying billions of dollars each year? They want consumers to buy their products and they are happiest when they buy the most expensive ones. That's why why the there will be a significant difference between the 13 and 15 inch so that consumers want to spend more, not because of aesthetic reasons but because of the bottom line.

There is a reason that the 13 MBP is the best selling laptop in Apple's lineup. All of which have nothing to do with the form factor.

The biggest is performance and portability. A Quad or Dual core i7 is still faster than a ULV i7 dual core processor.

Ram. The 13 inch is upgradeable. That will not change with the 2012 MBP. HD space. The MBP even when they switch to a SSD will have bigger drives available.

Cooling. You can run a MBP harder than a Air. I know I own both. The fans on my i7 Air will spin on minimal amount of work.

My 13MBP will handle much more than the Air. Beter thermals, Ram, processor play a big part in performance.

You have it wrong. They want people to buy their products first and foremost. That is the most important factor. Not which Macbook they sell. The 13 inch sells more than the 15 inch and 17 inch combined. Think about that for a min. Why is that? Why is the 13 inch the best selling laptop Apple sells?

Price. They cannot make a profit margin if you don't buy their products. With the price of the 15 inch, you will not see alot of volume being moved with the product. A few hundred dollars can make the difference between a person buying your laptop(Apple) or a competitors( Windows).

There is allot of first time buyers. Apple wants them. You make more money by selling more volume, getting new buyers than making a few hundred between a few laptop models.

Even if that person buys a base 13. They are most likely to be snared by the Apple bug, and probably upgrade their product when they upgrade their laptop. There is also the trikle down effect. You will also be more likely to buy their other products.

Quad core CPU would be great, but In really want a higher resolution screen on this year's model.

One of the major reasons I went for Lenovo 14" laptop over the 13" mbp last year was because the Lenovo have 1600X900 screen over the 1280X800 on 13" mbp. This makes huge difference when working on the go.

as it has been stated by apple the macbook air is the future of portable computing. the 13 inch mbp will not get quad core because that would further itself from the air. if anything i see apple making the transition from 13mbp to one day only a 13 mba. apple seems to do these things slowly which brings people back to trade in there old machines every year. slimmer with ssd and no optical drive in mbp seems to me like a nice transition to fazing out 13 mbp in favor of air. upgrading the cpu would be a step in the other direction.

and yes 13mbp is the best selling...its the CHEAPEST! (other than that little 11incher) everyone wants to be on the mac bandwagon and that is the easiest way to do that. this doesnt mean the 13air cant one day be the new best selling.

i know personally i have sold my high end 2011 13 inch in favor of a bto 2012 15 inch
