Quad Core i5 vs M2

I cant afford it at the moment but when I do get the money I'd like to upgrade to the touch bar M2 MacBook Pro which is allot cheaper than the other MacBook Pro wilt the HDMI port and SD card slot (which neither do I need anyways). My only gripe is the lack of MagSafe. Okay so whenever I do get the money 💰 how much faster would the M2 be over my current 2020 MacBook Pro? I DO NOT edit video, photos, audio, etc.. I just mostly use my mac for MS Office, Pages, Numbers, Quicken, web, watching movies, and so on. However I do connect my Camcorder to my Mac a bit to transfer medium res HD video (not 4K).

To be perfectly honest my present macBook pro fits the bill perfect for me. I had to turn off HDR video on my iPhone which tends to slow down my Mac when played. I would only upgrade when I got the 💵 because I love the touch bar and dont want to be outdated of the latest Mac OS in 2 years or so when apple phases out all Intel macs.

I actually upgraded my MacBook Pro 13-inch 2019 to the base MacBook Pro M2 and it has been amazing. The battery life is miles better and performance is stellar. I personally dislike the notch and the overall design of the new MacBook Pros. Again they are good laptops, but just not for me. I also like the Touch Bar too. Based on your activities, I think 8GB RAM will be fine, but definitely upgrade to 512GB SSD to avoid slow ssd speeds.

Yeah my configuration is 16GB/512GB SSD. I would say definitely upgrade RAM if you will be keeping it for 4+ years. You can always upgrade storage via external drives but not possible with RAM once it is bought.

I’d buy it in the same specs as present model. Problem is I don’t have the money at this time. I have had current MBP for 3 years since I bought it brand new.

As long as you don't need the speed, it is a waste of money to buy a new MacBook now. I would keep your current one until it can no longer cope with your workload. There is always a newer MacBook which is better in several ways, it will always cost more money.

If you don't want to be outdated in 2 years, wait for a good deal in 2 years. Who knows what they invented then what you really want in 2 years.

My MacBook fits my bill just fine. I cant afford to upgrade but if I could I only wanted not to be outdated when apple phases out updates for Intel Macs.

Any Apple Silicon MacBook would handle this all very easily and give you a massive bump in battery life.

After 3 years I have ZERO complaints about the battery life in my Intel MacBook. It lasts a long long long time.

Well, prepare to have even fewer complaints When I upgraded my 2020 i5 MacBook Air to the M1 MacBook Air, my battery life jumped to like 2-3x as long. If my battery is over 50% I will often just leave the charger at home becuase that's enough to get many many hours of use out of it.

Who said anything about a week-long vacation? I'm just saying the Apple Silicon Macs are a lot more power efficient than their Intel predecessors. Not a controversial opinion at this point.
