Is this realistic in the near future? Maybe when the price of chips gets cut next month? Is it possible that the new iMacs will come soon enough for the free printer and iPod (student discount)? Thanks!

    1. If you can somehow fit a Kentsfield in there.
    2. Some mobile variant that won't be out until 2008 as it it.

Mobile quad-core will be here in Q4 2008, though whether it would be suitable for an iMac is anyone's guess.

Is the Kentsfield huge or something?

I think with Penryn and it's 45nm technology it will be possible. Penryn Quad Core chips will run cooler than todays Quad Cores.

Nope to new iMacs coming soon enough for the free printer and iPod? It seems like this is not too unreasonable, even thought the quad core idea is quite unreasonable.

All Apple needs to do is move the chipset to Santa Rosa and the put a friggin' socket in rather than welding the CPU to the board. Then when QC CPUs come along we can all pop one in.

Too bad Apple will want you to be forking money over to themselves instead of giving it to Intel for a new CPU. They'll want you to buy a whole new system from them. It's nice to dream though.

They only solder in the processors in their laptops.

Excellent! Then lets hope that the good folks at Intel make a Socket P Quad Core!

Or Apple could just make a desktop machine use a damn desktop processor/chipset, and then you could have the Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core in there already.
