That's when Turbo Boost comes into play

True, good point. But I still want to see tests... The Nehalem quad cores will likely start at such a low base frequency (~1.8 GHz) compared to the dual cores (~2.8) that there's a lot of ground to make up...

Quad core laptops put my name at the very top of the list and about ever Pro photography on the planet as well. Apple can not make one fast enough for the graphics world. We need horsepower and that is the bottom line. Anything that can come close to a MacPro even at the same costs is welcome. Just don't tell Apple I said that. There very much is a NEED for quad core laptops

Turbo Boost does go up a lot though.

1.6 GHz (2.8 GHz Turbo)
1.73 GHz (3.07 GHz Turbo)
2.0 GHz (3.2 GHz Turbo)

Agreed on the need for tests.

Intel Core i7 laptops coming--or have they already arrived?

by Brooke Crothers

Waiting for a Core i7 laptop? While Intel is slated to release its first mobile "Nehalem" Core i7 processor in the coming months, the desktop counterpart has already spawned a cottage industry of benchmark-busting laptops.

"It's completely revitalized the desktop replacement laptop," said Kelt Reeves, president of enthusiast PC maker Falcon Northwest, referring to designs that have shoehorned a desktop Core i7 processor into a laptop enclosure.

3.3 GHz quad Core-i7-975
6 GiB RAM
1 GiB GTX280 M
only 12 lbs...

Yes, but this one will blow right past a quad Nehalem Mac Pro - and also the octo Woodcrest Mac Pros on many jobs.

And only 12 pounds light....wonder if it will Hackintosh.
I'm somewhat surprised they put the Core i7-975 in there. It is the fastest single socket processor Intel has out there. It will put quite a few Mac Pro models to shame.

nVidia already has the license for DMI though. Still no news on support controllers for Nehalem mobile from anyone but Intel right now though.

Intel has effectively killed off any IGP competition with the IGP being onboard alongside the CPU. You're not going to see many, if any, manufacturers going with an off CPU IGP due to the additional motherboard costs. The same goes for their desktop Core i5 platform.

That is why nVidia will rebrand the current single chip chipset as a discrete GPU with integrated southbridge. Even up the spec and range of GPU's they offer in that form.

Which is faster... a 2.4 liter or a 1.8 liter?

The 2.4 liter has to be faster. A Lotus Exige can't beat a Toyota Camry because the Camry has a bigger engine.

well, A 1.8 exige can beat a 5.3 hummer, having a more bigger engine doesn't mean it's faster than the smaller one
