Yeah it was the mac one -- you can see pictures of it on the first post ;)

I got it to work with 3D application such as Modo, Blender, Houdini and an in-house OpenGL gaming library I was working on. But I just didn't notice any performance increase worth mentioning -- at least for me on a dual quad 2.8ghz mac pro. Disappointed, I returned the card and went back to my 8800GT.

I'm not saying that its a total loss getting the 4800 but its one of those things where you get you get very little for your money, compared to any other upgrade you can do to your computer. And given OSX is all OpenGL bases most gaming cards can offer you almost the same quality for a fraction of the price.

You didn't extract the EFI, isn't it? :/

I do apologize but no I did not have the time. I returned it as quickly as I did to avoid heavy restocking fees. Any restocking fee % on a $1700 video card would have sucked.

nop ;)

A technician at the phone (from the resellers of the Quadro for MAC) TOLD ME to not insert the Quadro FX 4800 (PC Version) into the MAC PRO, CAUSE IT WOULD BE BURNT:

Do you think this would really happen???

Bah he's lying trying to sell a mac pro card, the only thing that can happen is that will not work but that's all.

It's because Nvidia do not optimise the drivers for OSX like they do for Windows. You are purely paying for the hardware. Quadro cards on a Mac should only be considered if you want to bootcamp for heavy CAD, CAM and DCC work.

ha ha ha

I do 3D modeling with Cinema 4D. So I need the Quadro
I need this for a new MacPro using Maya and After Effects. Anyone here with that same set-up? I do large datasets in Maya and very multi-layered Motion Design in AE. Trying to avoid using our 3D Workstations PCs as main systems. They make great render farms ;)

I´m also working with maya and need to get rid of this anoying bug that windows stop updating or show as white. This happenes to me with ATI 2600 XT as often as with Geforce 8800 GT ... and if the Quadro FX 4800 would get rid of this problem I´d buy it ... I don´t care for performance benachmarks that much. Any maya users here who got the Quadro?

Im using Maya with a Quadro FX 5600 on a Boxx 8400 PC and it runs great. I have tested it on a MacPro QuadCore 3GHz with a Quadro FX4500 and found most problems to be with the OS itself. No weird display anomalies just plain old crashes due to reg processes. I did however test it with a dual 30 which might be too much for the 512MB card.
Im ordering the FX 4800 soon along with a new MacPro. Im ready to move away from the PC permanently for 3D use.
Im retiring all my PC 3D workstations to renderfarm island :)

Hi.

i wanted to see how happy you are with your choice, thinking of ordering the 4800 and wanted to hear about your experience

Thanks

I ordered a new MacPro and it should be in this week. I have to wait till next week to order the card.
I went to SIGGRAPH 2009 New Orleans and talked to a few of the helpers at Nvidias booth. Strange, it seemed like Nvidia cornered (or spent all their money) the marketing angle at that event. Anyhoo, there is nothing in the future for the 5800 on the Mac :( They basically said that the 4800 is as good as it gets on the MacPro.

Okay, i guess i will just go ahead and do it too, its a hassle since i have the MacPro3,1 and currently have the 2600 and the 4870 and use a 23 LED display with DP so i have to buy the quadro and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 upgrade kit so i can use all my screens 2x30 and 23inch

Thanks for all advice, hope it goes well!

Ive never really had a bad hardware config just weird stuff due to software not compatible with the OS. Since I use Maya, I expect the worse presently. Yes its still buggy on the Mac. Just save your file every step :)

Thanks mBox,

i use 99 % realflow/maya and PS , so i will be saving a lot too i guess ;)

Thanks

My Quadro 4800 and GT 120 arrived last week so I installed these on Friday. The 4800 is massive and the 120 tiny in comparison. I put the 4800 in Slot 1 and the 120 in Slot 2 - it's a little worrying because the corner of the 120 rests on the 4800 and the underside of the circuit board is very close to the metal cover of the 4800.

I only have the new 24" cinema display which is connected to the 120. I bought the 4800 for CUDA - so far I have only managed to get CUDA 2.2 working. With 2.3 the Kernel extension doesn't load.

Worryingly, sometime on Friday evening the machine (Mac Pro 4,1) switched off. Possibly a power cut, but I'm not sure, and I hope it's not a problem with the new cards. The machine has been fine since Saturday morning.

fire up the quadro!
no, but really, fjf, how did your quadro 4800 experience turn out? any chance you can dump a rom for us?

Hopefully fjf got his CUDA rig sorted out, but for the record this card is fine with CUDA 3.0, as is the GTX 285, under Snow Leopard.
