Remember they bought a part of Intel, which used to be Infineon/Siemens, so they are not starting from scratch with cellular modems. Yes, RF is tricky, but you if you (still) have the right people.

PS: why would Qualcomm still supply 20% ? I see no technical reasons. TD-SCDMA in China is R.I.P., same for CDMA2000 in the US.

The main technical reason: likely that Apple’s 5G modems are fully integrated onto the SoC.

Thus, for the eventual A15 / A16 SoCs refresh for the base iPad, Apple will still need Qualcomm’s discrete modems.

Old iPhones: I don’t think they’re very relevant in total volume. It’s likely
high-volume low-end 2023 iPads running 2021 / 2022 SoCs—SoCs that require discrete (and thus) Qualcomm modems.

Agreed, think of all the other areas where Apple insourcing has enabled huge gains. Power savings, performance, space savings, no need to make chip generic for other customers, better system integration. And better (for the end user) carrier integration like the original Apple/Cingular partnership.
 
Yay, yeat another year of modem bingo, let's hope this is the last model where apple has to rely on 3d party midems in any way shape or firm

Ok laughing emote not withstanding, but is ut just me or has pistfixing gate to evrything made it totally meaningless. The original gate (Watergate if I'm not misstaken) firced a US president to resign, so a pretty major deal right? Maybe, just maybe we should reserve the gate sufix fore something of a similarly serious imoact. Bur I knoow I'm probably in a minority of 1 here, so why should I even bother? Well I just felt like it in the moment

I think you missed the memo that the M-series chips are basically beefed up A-series chips. iPhones have already had Apple Silicon in them since day 1, there will be no sudden performance boost from them suddenly putting AS in iPhones, because it was already there. Making their own modem chips instead of using Qualcomm's won't make any performance difference either, that switch is simply about reducing costs, since Qualcomm charges a hefty profit since no one else can supply them at the required quality.
 
Apple's flagship GPU is not comparable in performance to Nvidia. Dedicated GPU's outperform integrated gpu's by 3 to 5 times. They may win on power efficiency but that is mostly irrelevant.
Irrelevant to you but very important to others. It is best in class. Not our fault it is being compared to classes way above it.

How are they managing to build 5G chips without Qualcomm's blessing? I thought Qualcomm owns most of the patents around 5G communications.
 
I have just gotten the iPhone 13 (mindblowing upgrade from my XR), and I'll exchange it to get a 14 Pro at 60% of the price, but if 2023 means Apple Modem, I might wait.

It's irrelevant in the context of comparing performance. Despite Apple's claim these laptops only get 14ish hours of battery life so you are going to have to plug them in. As soon as you need to charge it they are essentially desktops.

Wintel notebooks of equivalent spec get battery life less than 10 hours or in some cases are in some case really only usable tethered to a power point.

You are not wrong but having to charge every 14 hours a far better then having to charge every 8 hours or having no effective unplugged in performance.

Power draw and everything’s very important. Not just for use but also for having a quick recharge that does not lower the life expectancy of the battery over time (when compared to slow charge).

Why are you comparing it to notebooks though? These A chips need to be compared to a 3090 because the OP said they were comparable with Nvidea. Well, they have the 3090, and that far outperforms the A1 Max.

I am very curious to see how Apple does making their own modems, in some ways this is harder than making your own processors. If they can match Qualcomms latest and greatest I’ll be very impressed, but I’m skeptical. I could see them having better efficiency due to being integrated and on the best TSMC process but matching Qualcomm is a tall order.
 
Definitely buying the 14 for the X65 modem. I will wait a few generations before buying an Apple modem.
