hi there, im new to this forum, a friend of mine is selling me his brand new 16gb iphone 3g for $100.

Now i had a question about the os 3.0. I have heard mixed reviews with the 3g and this OS. Some say their phone ran the same or faster and others complained that it slowed down a ton.

Was that a bug when it was first released that has been fixed or still an on going issue?

I used to have 3.0 on my 3G, including all the betas, and had no problem with speed or reliability. OTOH I now have 3.1.2 so unless you need to be on 3.0 for whatever reason (baseband etc...) then it may not hurt to upgrade to the latest firmware.

The iPhone 3G runs best on 2.2.1. It's very fast and memory efficient. So far 3.1.2 isn't satisfactory on my iPhone 3G, so I've downgraded to 2.2.1 until it is.

And to think I was so tempted to put "don't let TheSpaz fool you" in my post, if only one could go back in time 3 minutes.

im using an lg vu currently so im sure even with the 3.0 upgrade the iphone will murder my current phone lol. Mostly gunna be used to surf the web, text and the gps. Not really a big gaming guy for phones.

I like the landscape keyboard though, so i want to do the 3.0 upgrade so i can text with that

This. Not something you'll care about OP.

OS 3.0 is fine for most people, and it offers a number of features you're probably going to want. Any "speed" issues can not be discerned by normal people.

He didn't ask if 3.0 was fine for most people. He was asking if it slowed down the iPhone 3G and it DOES. I have done plenty of upgrades and downgrades to know that 2.2.1 runs like a dream and 3.1.2 runs like a dog. Almost everything is lagger on 3.1.2. iPod is a dog, opening and closing apps is clunky, scrolling is choppier in quite a few apps and it just doesn't perform well.

If smoothness is what you care about, then you'll want 2.2.1. If features is what you care about, then you want 3.1.2. You decide.

However, you're exaggerating the loss of speed, which is why I wrote what I did. I don't think the OP will notice.

I'm not exaggerating. Have you downgraded to 2.2.1 yourself to see the difference? It's like night and day. 2.2.1 is very snappy compared to 3.anything.

OP: 2.2.1 was designed and optimized for iPhone 3G (slow hardware) while 3.x was designed and optimized to run well on iPhone 3GS (fast hardware). They made 3.x bloated with 100 new features, but you pay with a loss of performance. I've tried every single 3.x version there is on my iPhone 3G and none of them run like 2.2.1 does.

Also, landscape text isn't as amazing as it sounds. Try typing vertical for a little while and you'll love it. Besides, often times I'll go to put my iPhone in my lap after sending a text and it will switch to landscape, then I have to pick it up, rotate it back to vertical and wait 2 seconds while it switches back. It's annoying. If that kind of thing doesn't bother you then upgraded to 3.1.2 because if you never had anything to compare it to, you won't miss the speed increase of 2.2.1.

That's all I need to say.

Your really not a fan of the 3.0 os on the 3g huh... If it makes any difference, i will be upgrading in the summer anyways, thats when im eligable for a full upgrade in my contract. It will be either the newest iphone out or the 3gs.

No, I'm not a fan of 3.0. It sucks.

Do whatever you want. Run 3.1.2 and don't even think about it. Don't let me get you down because I have certain preferences.

3.1.2 will work great for you.

it probably wont be that noticeable for me since i would be starting with that OS im assuming.

So i guess its about personal preference and the apps you use. Some people really notice the difference and others dont. Im guessing it boils down to what your using the phone for.

Coming from a basic touchscreen phone like my lg vu im sure even with the 3.0 os it will be a massive boost lol

Most people want cut, copy and paste. Also, most want the landscape mode, for the ease of texting. There are lots of other reasons, but those are the main ones.

If you want to see what TheSpaz is referring to, I'll try to find the thread he started about this "speed" issue. If the difference matters to you, then you shouldn't upgrade to 3.0 and above.

Here's the thread, but he's deleted the links to the movies he uploaded:

    http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=8216538&postcount=88

I'd suggest reading posts he started and you'll see what kind of issues he had. If his issues are issues for you, then you shouldn't upgrade.

Well i used my buddies iphone 3g quite a bit for a number of months before the 3.0 so i guess time will tell if i notice this lag.

Phone should arrive tuesday, brand new.

Got a good deal i think, his 3g broke, sent it back to apple and they are sending him a brand new one. While waiting for it to show up, his brother gave him a 2 day old 3gs for free that he didnt like. So im getting a brand new, never opened 3g 16gb for $100.

3.0 - 3.1.2 etc will be perfectly fine for you. You will not notice any difference as you havn't been using 2.2.1 every day since it came out!

Get it and enjoy it. I loved my 3G on 3.1.2 and would still be using it if i hadn't had the spare money to upgrade.
