Im going on a cruise in a couple of weeks and was wondering if anyone could answer my question about what airplane mode does or doesnt do...

If I put my phone on airplane mode while overseas on a cruise ship will it not allow my phone to connect to a service and all me to not be charged any outrageous fees?

Or is it just easier to take my sim card out for the week that im on the boat?

Thanks for any help!

Airplane mode does exactly what the Airlines want....turns off all radios.

As the last poster stated, after turning on Airplane mode, you can go back and turn on WiFi so you can have WiFi access on the ship.

First things first, make sure data roaming is turned off. If you are using AT&T you won't get charged anything for simply having your phone turned on with data roaming turned off. You will be charged incoming text messages, but I believe it's pretty cheap. Unless you get a lot of incoming sms messages, it won't be expensive at all to turn the phone on with data roaming turned off.

You can then pop on wifi on the ship for data.

Verizon has an international data package for $64.00 a month that will give you unlimited data while on the cruise ship. The cool thing about Verizon is they will prorate the charges, so if you are on a 5-day cruise have them turn on the feature the day your cruise departs and turn off the feature the day your cruise returns (I called the day after, just to make 100% sure I wouldn't be charged data for that day). I got unlimited data on my cruise for about $14 which is a steal compared to the per kb rate. AT&T might have something similar so you should check.

If you're on airplane mode (and make sure you don't let it get turned off) you don't need to remove your sim or turn off data roaming.

Although turning off data roaming might be a good idea anyway. No need to have it on unless you plan on using it.

I went to Europe and since I heard about the horror stories of chrages people have come back with I went ahead and purchased a 20MB international data plan just to catch any riff-raff that might have gotten through between switching and what not. It was only $24/prorated so that was a good deal.

Otherwise airplane mode is best.

i dont think there are towers in the ocean:rolleyes:

tho if your going on land airplane mode should be fine

Actually, it appears that some cruise ships have cell towers on board that link up via satellite. They charge very high rate for usage.

Airport Mode

Why doesn't my iphone have a "cruise ship" mode? I know I'm supposed to put it on airport mode while flying, but what about when I'm on a cruise ship.

Data Roaming

If you go abroad, make sure you turn off data roaming. If not, you can still get charged even if you don't use your phone or email or internet. If someone leaves you a voice mail, the voice mail function on the phone will incur data charges.

Not true if you're in airplane mode.

Just put it on airplane mode and you'll be fine.

Also, on-ship WiFi could be charged per minute, I'd make sure to check with the cruise line before using it (although I imagine if it's pay per minute you'd have to register with them before you could use it).

Most of it is charged by the minute. They're always trying to make a buck on those ships. Planes have a charge for the day or flight, but some flights offer it free because of some promotion going on at the time.

Aggies...never get the joke. :p

You obviously haven't spent enough time on MR. :)

Norwegian Cruise Line

I'll be on a cruise to Bermuda this summer on Norwegian Cruise Line. They have wi-fi in the rooms and the computer center. BUT, you must buy wi-fi access for about a buck a minute, no matter where you use it. I don't think I'll be doing that! I wonder if there are any public wi-fi hotspots on Bermuda?

FISRT THING ITS A SHIP NOT A BOAT. NO AIRPLANE MODE IS MORE EASIER.
Thanks for any help!
