question about calibrating battery

it says Turn off the computer or allow it to sleep for five hours or more.

if i decide to turn it off, do i still have to wait 5 hours or its only if you leave it in sleep mode...........cause I just finish running down the battery...it went to sleep and i decide to power off with the power button...then now im alreayd charging the battery.........maybe i just messed up the process lol.
