I have an old imac swivel head g4 and am about to get a mac mini intel.
I use my computer mostly for watching movies and editing video with FCP.

Question:

Can I link the two together to shorten rendering time or get any benefit out of the two machines working together or should I sell the g4 for $20 and buy a dvd to watch on my new mini?

Unless you want to use the iMac's monitor with ScreenRecycler, just sell it. Even if it were feasible to use the two computers as a rendering farm or something, the Mini is at least an order of magnitude faster than the G4.

If I were you, I'd sell the iMac G4 on eBay or something. Because of its cool design, its a bit of a collector's item now, so you could sell it for a decent amount, which you could use to get some sort of upgrade for your Mac Mini if you wanted to :D

What sort of specs are you looking at on your Mini anyway?

the mac mini I'm interested in has 4g ram, 2.56 processor. Nvidia Geforce 9400 (256RAM).
