Has anyone here with Rogers in Canada who got the "special data deal" of $30 for 6GB actually gone over the limit? Has the limit even been reached? Would be nice to know in case they offer this deal again...

I have that package. I have never gone over 6gb. At the end of the month, I'm usually at about 1gb. The only way you would ever go over is if you were watching a lot of youtube videos or tethering

Not even close; Rogers own data usage study showed most iPhone 3G users - about 95% - are at about 500MB per month or less; this makes the 3GB deal a good and safe one if it fits your budget.

Interesting stats. Makes me re-think things. I'll wait to see what Rogers do with their next promotion....

How in god's name do you all use so much data? I have the 6GB plan also, but since summer I don't think I've even racked up 1GB in total.

Albeit, I have no 3G where I live, so it's mostly EDGE, and not TOO much browsing, but still...

..seems to me that you answered your own question.

    Be wary…

While 500 mb may seem like enough data now, we are still in the infancy stages of the iPhone as a device and concept. Soon, 1 gb and even 3 gb will not be enough to deal with the myriad of photo and video qualities and sizes we will be uploading to various places. Remember when 25 gb seemed like all the data in the world on our Internet connection? Now it's 10 movies non-HD. Everything is going the way of HD and the iPhone will not be left out.

This is the way I looked at it when I bought my plan, it was $25 for 500MB or $30 for 6gigs. I took the 6gigs just more as a failsafe incase I happen to go over. So far (4 months of ownership) I've only ever used a couple hundred MB/month. So really I could be saving $5/month since I've never used over 500MB in a single month yet.

The main reason I upped from the 500MB plan to 6GB plan was for the tethering. That alone makes it worth the extra five bucks.

Yep, tethering and future-proofing my data usage was enough for me to spend the few extra bucks.

Of course, the deal is no longer available, so you'll have to wait perhaps to the next big device launch before it comes back.

I just finished a study with Fido and in one of the questions, it was written:

What is more convenient for you?

    -3G USB key (30$/month)
    -iPhone tethering (45$/month)

That caught my attention because the "free" tethering is only good until December 2009. I wonder how much it's going to be in 2010...

when I talked to the Fido rep, only new activations "may" be charged for tethering. As far I know, any current customers with 1GB or over plans would be OK.

I'm a pretty heavy user and I've never even come close to using 1 GB of data a month. Granted I'm on wi-fi a lot of the time, I struggle to understand how someone could actually use 6GB of data a month.

Tethering will probably be $20 a month, same as the mobile internet sticks are (I'm referring to Rogers specifically, can't speak on Fido or Bellus).

I've used less than 1GB in the last three months. I can't imagine ever going over my 6GB limit in a month - at least not with regular on-device surfing. Maybe if I ditched my home internet and tethered for everything...

How is iPhone tethering $45/month? The data plans are the same for the USB key and data phones...

And ya, Rogers will charge people but I'll call in and complain and get the credit since I've been with them long enough

Yeah that's what caught my attention but like i said, this was only a study made by Fido. Maybe they're still not sure about the pricing for tethering with the iPhone
