this is kind of a random thing, so its somewhat hard to explain, here goes nothing:

my friend and i both have iphone 4's. this is happening on his, not mine -

if he goes into his messages, and goes into search bar - type a random letter, w for example.... random deleted text messages pop up with the letter "w". there is no name, and you cant open it - but they are there. some of which are from over a year ago that he remembers.

mine doesnt do it, i tested it by finding a random text from a friend, deleted all of his texts, searched - and nothing showed.

our guess is that its something with his sim card or something? he wants them all gone, dont know how to do it

Or maybe something is in the cache memory of the iPhone 4 that is not allowing to delete them completely. Very weird.

yeah, its really weird - never seen it before, and its not doing it on anyone elses phone in office. wonder if its just a hardware issue on phone

Judging from this statement, your friend used a previous iPhone backup on to his iPhone 4, since the iP4 its not a year old.

So the problem lies on the back up, tell him to restore as a new phone and then sync his stuff. The old messages should go away.
