My wife and I both work for companies with Office 365 subscriptions. When we log in we see the offer to download the 2016 version of Office to our MacBook for free.

We already have the 2011 version (purchased a permanent license). Can the 2016 version be on the MacBook along with 2011?

And if either my wife or I quit working for the companies that provide us with Office 365, what happens to the 2016 version we download to our MacBook? Does it stop working?

    Thanks!

The 2016 version of MS Office can co-exist alongside Office 2011. However, Office 2016 is bloated compared to 2011 and in my opinion offers nothing any better than the 2011 version. I have both versions and have removed 2016.

Since Office 365 is a paid subscription, I imagine that if you pay for it after quit working for your company, Microsoft will continue to honor the license.

MS offers employees of where I work the ability to get the Office 2016 - the perpetual license. MS Home Use Program. Very inexpensive.

It stops working until you pay for either Office 2016 or Office 365. The 2011 version keeps working.

Ok so you're saying companies report to Microsoft when a user is no longer eligible for the software if no longer employed there?

No. But I assume they run licenses that need renewal every so often, most likely yearly, and you just won't get a license for next year, and that way, it'll stop working when the license runs out. That's how they do it for the staff at my school anyway - business licensing.
If you do not get new license keys on a regular basis - no clue.
