Question about getting an iphone and not liking it

My dad wants a smart phone, he is in his 60s and I am not sure if he is actually going to use the features. What is At*t policy about having an iphone for a few months and going back to a normal phone. I am thinking of getting him a iphone 4 when the price goes down when the new one comes out

You can prolly pick up a 3GS for a song and go with no contract

I know you said smartphones, but how about the iPad 2? Old folks seem to like it better since things are easier to read because the screen is big.
