In the "hot news headline" section in the middle of the page, how would you implement the transition between headlines?: would you use ajax, or a hide and show technique?

To answer your question, it is most likely ajax/jQuery fadeIn/Out.

Apple uses the Prototype JavaScript library for a lot of there stuff. This looks mostly like in house stuff though. Pretty simple effect.
