I was wondering what is jail break? Is it to get 3rd party app like new background?

Is there any risk in doing jailbreak? Let say if a Ipod touch 5g comes out, does it need to be out a few months before there are jailbreak?

Jailbreaking allows you to 'customize' and get more out of your Apple device. For example alot of people jailbreak to use 'Winterboard' and give their homescreen a 'theme' like so-http://apple.hdblog.it/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/icomplite_springboard1.JPG

Not the best image but hope you get the picture.

The only risk is that you screw up the jailbreak process but all can be fixed via a restore. So their is virtually no risk.

Well, it's not just customizing. By jail-breaking your iPod/iPhone, you get the Cydia app. From Cydia you can download a lot of things to customize your iPod/iPhone. This is not only using special themes, you can for example also download Installous (app from which you can download other apps for free!). There are also self-designed games from hackers, themes as already mentioned and other things to improve your iPod/iPhone.

Correction. Installous is an app that grabs unofficial download links of cracked apps that can be download for free. These are pirated apps and is stealing from the original company or person.

Many benefits to jailbreaking.

Some risks having wipe out iPod if it crashes.
And lag will certainly appear later on.
