Im writing a program at school for my final project that would help
me and the department I work in out. My question is can they legally use
it? Do I need to get a copyright for it (if that makes sense)?

Also I really like Textpad for windows its I believe SubethaEdit looks like its similar but does it have an add on like text pad to compile and run class files? I would rather use my make to programming!!

Thanks in advance

If you write the application then you have total control over how it is distributed. You can release it online as open source, you can release online as closed source, you can give it to your friends, you can charge money for it, you can require a serial key, you can charge money for people online, but give it to your friends free, whatever! That's the beauty of making your own stuff!
