Not clean install. Not the upgrade option. You guys must be from Windows World. We don't need to do clean installs when upgrading to the next system. Just Archive and Install and all will be perfect. All your preferences will remain and you will gain the advantages of the new system without losing what you have already set up..

Ok, when I get Leopard, and insert the disk in my mac mini, I assume there will be a menu choice to pick the Archive and Install? Is this correct?

Leopard & Parallels - Question..

Hi all.. Just picked me up a brand-spankity new 24" IMAC, 2.8 GHz and loaded it with 4 Gb. This is my first Apple since.. well.. wayyyy back and my, have things changed !

Yes, I am a frustrated Windows user but unfortunately I still need some Win programs for work, etc. If I have to put up with WIN, I'm sure I'll enjoy the experience more on my IMAC.

OK - So I'm waiting for a fresh copy of XP to arrive and just purchased/downloaded Paralles. I haven't installed it yet 'cause I'm waiting for XP to show.

But I'm really looking forward to installing Leopard on this baby (I know, I could have waited a few more weeks for it to come pre-installed, but after seeing this machine in the local APPLE Store, I could't leave without it !!)

Questions and looking for recommendations please..

1) Would a Leopard install overwrite or corrupt anything I've done with Parallels ?
2) Should I wait to install Leopard - then re-install Parallels - before I install WIN ?
3) Does it matter ?

Any help would be appreciated.. BTW - I admit it.. I was a "lurker" here on this Forum for a while and well, you folks actually helped me decide to get the new "addition" to my household. So - Thank you all !! :)

If I wanted to use the Achive and Install option but first wanted to backup either parts of the drive (ie... pictures , music , videos I have) or even a full backup, what is the best way to do the back up to keep from losing anything?

Is there a program that does this well? or can I just Copy & Drag over to my external drive?

Yes, as far as I remember the default choice is just to do an upgrade.

You can then click an "Upgrade Options" button, which gives you the choice between:

[1] Upgrade
[2] Archive and Install
[3] Erase and Install (+ usual health warnings about backing up)

You then click OK and proceed through the installation.

If you have ever had to use the installer package you will find the process very familiar.

I really wouldn't worry.

People seem to be spending much longer worrying about the whole process than the upgrade will actually take!

It is pretty shiny, upgrading.

Apple will tell you to restart from the disk (it will do this for you when you agree to restart after clicking the OSX icons in the disk's folders).

Then you restart to some shiny 3D graphics floating around saying 'HELLO' in several different languages with some nice little tinkly-appley music.

Then they get you to enter in your personal info, answer a few questions about the type of install you want (I think) and then it installs it. Restarts. Is like the same computer with a new os.

Simple.

There are a few types of installs for erasing everything, putting the old system apps and info in some folder, and just putting in the new OS.

You will be amazed how easy it is.

The shiny 3D graphics come after the install is completed and the computer restarts for the second time, just so you don't expect it to come up when you initially go to install Leopard. Also, the personal details are only needed if installing for the first time onto a blank hard drive, or if doing a clean install. An archive and install is fine — a clean install wastes a lot of time and basically just a manual archive and install. Most applications will work fine, and the ones that are buggy or don't work at all will usually just need an upgrade from the developer. Bear in mind that apps which have died a death development wise don't tend to last two OS revisions, so Panther apps which luckily worked in Tiger may end up breaking in Leopard.

My advice to anyone who relies on their Mac for business or other needs is to use something like Carbon Copy Cloner to replicate everything to an external HD and go through the upgrade process on that. If it works, you can then do it for real. Ideally, though, wait for 10.5.1! :p

Congrats!
1) No, it shouldn't.
2) Think of Parallels as a program, not an OS.
3) No.

What about all the iLife apps?

Ok, So I was and still am a Windows user. But I have switched over to the Apple hardware.. In regards to the 10.5 upgrade...

1) If I do a clean install. How do I reinstall the iLife07 apps that came with my MBP? The disc that came w/ the computer only allows an ALL or nothing Image restore correct?

2) For the Signal User 10.5, can I install and test on my Mini 1st? If everything goes well, then I would delete the Mini installation and then install it on my MBP? Does the OSX activation process work the same way as windows?
Basically, the mini is the test machine and MPB is production (Can't have it go down)

Probably a stupid question, but still...

When I upgraded from Panther to Tiger on my Mac Mini I did an archive and install and it all went very well. Nice.

I am now the owner of a Mac Pro and this came, of course, with Tiger. I'm a programmer with a little UNIX experience and generally like to fiddle about. At one stage I tried making and installing a newer version of the PHP libraries than come as standard with Tiger and also MySQL. This didn't go all that well and the install never finished properly. As far as I know I haven't damaged OS X at all and PHP reports version 4.4.7 from Terminal although I haven't used it in anger since.

So (finally) on to my Leopard query to throw in to the mix!

If I do an archive and install I assume that this replaces all of the system files including PHP (which I imagine will be version 5.x in Leopard). Will this unknot any problems I *may* have caused myself when I was attempting my own build? Or should I just pretend that I'm back in time with a Windows machine (shudder) and do the whole backup ... wipe ... install from scratch thing *just in case*?

1. The disc is not simply an image, it has two options for normal users, Install OS X and bundled apps, or just install the bundled apps. So if you wipe it clean with a new install of leopard, you put in the old disc, and click install bundled apps

2. OS X does not have a serial key, nor does it require activation.

so what about apps like the ADOBE master suite?

I understand where your coming from with all the other apps not being touched in the user folders, But Like I have apps such as PS and things from my master suite collection.
Will they be affected? will I lose my work?

basically, I need to know whether or not I should uninstall everything then upgrade or would it possible to get a step by step help to upgrading my tiger to leopard and still have ALL my files including apps that aren't apple related.

And is it safe to do so ? or should I rather just stay with Tiger?
