Other Question about Mac OS Lion, iCloud sign in and FaceTime

Hi Everyone,

I decided to upgrade my MacBook from Snow Leopard to Lion as after surveying my usage I discovered there were only 3 programs on my SSD that I had (but never really used) that were PowerPC only and needed Rosetta on Snow Leopard to run. Since staying on Snow Leopard wasn't really benefiting me software wise, I decided to take the plunge and try out Lion (the last OS supported by my 2008 MacBook) so I could use newer versions of some of the software that I DO use, such as VLC, MacTracker, iTunes, different browser options, etc. Anyways, I've upgraded and everything went smooth and seems just fine, BUT I cannot seem to sign into iCloud with Lion. Whenever I try to sign in to iCloud through the "operating system iCloud sign in" Lion claims that my username or password are incorrect, but they are not. I can sign into iCloud everywhere else without incident (iPhone, newer Macs, online, etc) . So, I've been looking around online and there seems to be little specific information that I can find about "signing into iCloud with Lion", only generic iCloud sign in difficulties that I'm not certain are my specific issue. Does anyone out there have any advice or specific Lion info they could share or tips? The reason I would like to try and sign in is I would like to see if once signed into iCloud if FaceTime still works on Lion, that would be pretty useful for me with my old MacBook if it's possible. If there is not a way to sign into iCloud specifically but there is a way to sign into FaceTime only (and it still works) that would be fine as well, as that's actually my ultimate goal. I also know I could post this in the "Lion" forum, but it looked less used so I though this would be a better place to start.

P.S. One immediate benefit I saw to moving to Lion was the newer version of iTunes Lion supports STILL has working Internet radio which I really enjoy a lot!!! Yay, score!!!

I believe at a certain point Apple started requiring 2FA to be active. It used to be/still is to some extent that you get a warning on your other devices about your iCloud sign-in on the older device. If you approve it, then it gives you a code. On newer devices you'd simply enter that code in a response box on screen.

But with older Macs you need to add that code to the end of your password. It's been a really long time since I had to do this so I can't give you a step by step instruction, I'm sorry. You may need to dig around in your online Apple ID settings (not the icloud.com settings, the ones for your actual Apple ID). https://account.apple.com

You can still get internet radio on older versions of iTunes. You just get the stream url, or a PLS file and use that. It gets added to your library. But if you meant the list of stations, then yeah. That's been problematic for a while now.

Thanks for the hints, I'll check out my sign in settings tomorrow when I get a chance. The really odd thing is that me trying to sign into iCloud on Lion didn't trigger any warning on any of my other devices, it simply did nothing except alert me (incorrectly) that my e-mail or password was incorrect (neither was, I checked about a hundred times).

I'll keep digging into this though and see if I can figure it out.

I appreciate your suggestions!

Apple do not support login to iCloud from anything earlier than high Sierra.

Because older platforms do not support the relevant security standards.


ALSO:
Your iCloud account is important to keep secure; allowing 15 year old devices that are missing half a decade or more of security fixes to connect would compromise the security of your account.

If someone owns your iCloud account (e.g., via compromising your logged in lion install or potentially exploiting the old security protocols old version software Lion use to connect) they can log into anything you use login with Apple for.

I cannot speak for OP, but just commenting on this…you realize that you are responding to a post in the Early Intel Mac forums correct?

I'm not arguing, I'm just simply pointing out where it is you're posting.

It's a bit like pointing out the dangers of jailbreaking when replying to a post in the MacRumors jailbreaking subforum. Just saying.

Sure.

I'm just explaining the WHY of Apple blocking iCloud. Essentially, connecting old devices risks the security of your account. Either through end device compromise, or leaving the old protocols which are no longer secure, enabled because that's all the old devices understand.

So thats the why of the reality of the situation.

Run what you want on what you want, but don't expect Apple to let you log into cloud services with it if it hasn't been maintained in 10 years, thats all.

It seems like unless someone knows a hacky way to login the FaceTime separately on Lion it might be (?) a lost cause. I can login to iCloud using a web browser on Lion so accessing that isn't a concern for me at all, I mostly want to get into the FaceTime video call part. Sooooo, since it seems that Skype, Zoom and now (?!) FaceTime are out for early Intel Macs, is there another comparable working video chat option that works with Early Intels, and specifically Lion, that is supported with clients on different platforms? FaceTime was a great option because everyone who is in the Apple ecosystem already can use that so other less well know options are not as desirable, but it would be nice to try and get it working. It's on my "Early Intel Macs" wishlist.

Thanks everyone so far for their posts with hints, I really appreciate it! I know what I'm getting into using an older Mac so the challenge is part of the fun!

iCloud sign in with Lion worked finally. I wasn't typing in something correctly but I fixed that and then got the 6-digit number from Apple and now iCloud works with Lion properly.

It seems that Facetime is not able to sign in though so that is gone.

What does it get you?

Everything iCloud related syncs with your computer and stays in sync. The only thing I couldn’t get to login was Facetime. Basically you get what you get on other iCloud synced devices.

Based on what happens on 10.9, I'd expect this to work for Contacts and Calendars, but probably not anything else.

Documents & Data and iCloud Keychain (I can't remember if that exists in Lion) won't work. Reminders will work as long as you haven't "upgraded" your Reminders account, but if you have, there's no way to go back.

iCloud Mail can be made to work if you use Aqua Proxy and set it up per the instructions. Notes can work the same way, but you may have trouble syncing with modern iOS devices that don't store notes as emails; I recommend setting up a Google account to sync notes instead.

I actually have no idea if Safari works or not, but you really shouldn't be using Safari on 10.7.

I´m using Broadcasts (from the AppStore) for Internetradio. Free for up to 5 stations, one time purchase if you want more.

Thanks for that. Always nice to find new apps.

That said, I have no Macs using Lion and my primary Mac is using Sonoma (via OCLP). So, hopefully OP may find it useful. I'm sure those finding this thread in a Google search might.

For the record, I'm using Radiola on my Mac Pro.
