I received ny Apple watch yesterday and am not sure there isn't something wrong with it. The battery was so dead on arrival that the watch wouldn't power up. This is the first Apple product I've had this happen with. Anyway I charged it up and it seemed rather slow to charge. I played with it a bit today but for the most part it spent the day in the box. After about 10 hours from 100% charge it was down to 17%. I did a bit of research and tweaked some settings to help conserve battery life. One suggestion was turn the the watch off while on the charger. I did this but as soon as I placed it on the charger it booted up again on its own. Should it do this or is there something wrong with it? It seems like this shouldn't happen. Thanks for any help

most everything you describe is normal but if you didn't use it at all and it ran down to 17% that's not normal. was in brand new or used?
the watch screen comes on when put on charger but the screen should go off momentarily or jut palm it to turn off screen. it's not a like a phone battery, this is a 1-2 day battery when used, so it will run down.

Thanks for this. So if the watch is completely powered off and placed on the charger, the Apple logo will appear and the watch will boot itself up?

oh I just tried it, yes the Apple logo comes up, but what is the problem with that? just palm it to turn off the screen if battery use is your concern or screen will go off on it's own. I never tried that, good to know...
I guess because of the limited battery Apple takes every opportunity to charge it even if it was powered off. - there's peeps smarter than me here tho.

I guess my concern was if this is normal behavior or not. Doing a bit of research into battery issues, I read that powering it off while charging would allow it to charge faster, but it looks like ther is no way to do this if it powers itself up when placed on the charger.

Well I believe it will charge faster with the screen off, just like most devices. -that's the main battery user.
also I set my screen on time to 15 sec in normal wake mode. turning off auto wake up on wrist turn will also save lots of batt time.

Thanksfor the help. I was just alittle surprised at the battery life on the watch as well as the fact that it seemed to drag my Iphone battery down as well. I'm sure it is going to take some settings adjustments to make it really usable.

Yes, just having bluetooth on my phone on all the time effects my phone batt usage.

Try powering off your iPhone before charging it and see if it stays off.

my watch was also flat dead when i opened the box, i purchased in march of this year so it probably was sitting on the shelf for a while by then.

also give it a few charging cycles, my battery life got better in a week or 2 after the battery got a little exercise. (and the newness wares off and you use it bit less)
i remember thinking it would never make it though the day, it's now almost 10pm and i'm at 53%

Agree with most of what has been said here regarding charging, plus when it's on the charger and oriented on its side you get nightstand mode.

my 42 SSB was dead when I opened the box, too. Kinda tells you that Apple made too many watches and these have been sitting around for a long time. My previous two watches had over 50% out of the box.
