Question about Newsstand

I'm looking at Newsstand and it seems that every magazine is free. Is this b/c for the first month magazines are showing off what they offer, or are you agreeing to a subscription when you download the "free" magazine?

Once you click on the newspaper/magazine it will either give you a sample of it or will ask you right away to subscribe. Nothing's free 😱

its not free. I've downloaded a couple that said free, but as soon as I want to read any of them, it tells me to subscribe...

Do any magazines work on an iPhone? I downloaded wired and GQ and both were iPad only
