Question about purchasing a 3G iphone.

If i already have a plan with the company who is going to be selling the iPhone, what would i need to do to purchase one. Assuming I'm already hooked into a 3 year contract with 2 to go.

i can only speak for the US, here at&t erases your old contract and starts a new 2 year one on date of purchase
