Comparing Anandtech's annotated die shots of the M1, M1 Pro, and M1 Pro Max, it appears the RAM has been moved from off-die to on-die. Is that correct and, if so, why did they do it—what are the manufacturing and performance ramifications of one vs. the other?
The top screenshot is the M1. The RAM channels are on-die, but the RAM itself is not.
EDIT: Never mind, @littlepud explainded below below that (even though Anandtech's annotations for the M1 Pro/Max say "LPDDR5" instead of "LPDDR4X Channels") it's channels in both cases.
[There's also GPU binning on the M1 Pro and M1 Max with the 14-core and 24-core GPU options, respectively, which are available on the 14" MBP only.]
