Question about ripping DVDs....and my DVD drive.

I am having some problems with ripping DVDs onto my MBA so that I can digitize them. At first, I downloaded Mac DVD Ripper Pro to try it out. I used all 5 trials unsuccessfully, because the process would get about halfway through and then crash. So, now I am trying MakeMKV, and I am getting this error message:

IPC error (Mac OS X)
The IPC error happens when operating system (Mac OS X) suddenly "looses" the Blu-ray drive. Most of the time this happens with external USB drives and is caused by inadequate USB power. Please try using a powered USB enclosure (or powered USB hub) and short USB cables.

The drive that I am using is the original optical drive from my old 2010 MacBook Pro, enclosed in an OWC Value Line, Super Slim, USB 2.0 drive enclosure. Is the problem that I need a new optical drive or a different enclosure? Can anyone make a recommendation for either that would fix the problem?

Try Handbrake. It's the one that most people seem to use.

I was under the impression that Handbrake wouldn't bypass copy protection on commercial DVDs?

Depends. Sometimes it can, sometimes it can't. It's free, so worth a try.

Sounds like a hardware problem. Drive, enclosure or cable.
Makemkv is quite good, allowing you to remove the DRM from the BR or DVD. I use handbrake to transcode to different formats.

I bought a secret service movie DVD the other day for strategic testing purposes.

The DVD player can play the movie in OS X High Sierra and OS X Mojave. However I was not able
to play the movie via Airplay on my Yamaha HS monitor boxes. The video and the audio is not in sync.
Apple's audio core extension does not manage to play the audio and video in sync.

This said, I was looking for an easy, simple, elegant solution to rip the DVD so that I can import
the compressed movie in iTunes as a "Home movie". Yes, now Airplay works if I play the movie
in iTunes using my Airport Express and my Yamaha HS monitor boxes.

I have tested DVD software. Ripit from thelittleappfactory is still the best and most convenient
way to rip your movie DVDs.

It even finds other languages on your DVD movie that are not accessible via player.
