Something must be off then. Uncertain whether its the player or software settings or combo of both. I currently have over 550 movies (approx 70% are Blu-ray) that have been handbraked to m4v's. All of them play audio perfectly. First track is always 5.1, 2nd is dolby surround II. System is aTV3 connected to a Sony AV system via hdmi 1.4. Using Plex & Plexconnect. YMMV 😀

Oh, believe me - I could write a book on variable mileage. I used to beta-test firmwares for Popcorn Hour, and man... the number of things that can be working for one guy but utterly crocked for the next is dizzying. I've come close to tears, at times.

I do have another problem that is personal to me - I have a particularly acute sense for duff audio-sync. In blind testing, I can spot delays of 20ms (one of the reasons why I got the gig for beta-testing, I think...). I can be watching something with other people and say, "Christ, this is unwatchable...!!!", and they'll not be able to see what the problem is.

I do not consider this a gift. It ruins my enjoyment of movies and television.

I hate that as well, it could be many things though. Not least cheap TVs and home cinema amplifiers.

Or dare I say Monster gold plated cables 😛

Yes, indeed, it could be anything in the chain.

Provided audio-sync is consistently off, you can compensate with a manual delay - at either the media streamer or amplifier stage. But where it's all in and out, up and down, forwards and backwards... well, everything is ruined. Might as well throw it all away.

I just wanted to update the thread and let everyone know I am just about done with the ripping of my BR library.

MakeMKV and Handbrake have done an excellent job. The settings suggested were perfect.

I can not tell the difference between an HD BR and the digital rip streaming via iTunes/Apple TV.

Thanks everyone!

😎

Glad it worked out for you. This is the workflow that many who have been doing it for years use. As you discovered the MakeMkv process is quite fast and while Handbrake is slow you queue multiple files to run overnight or while at work and its not really a problem.

That's a major drag!

I've ripped & encoded hundreds of BRs over the last 5 years (I started with my DVDs over 10 years ago) and what you describe has never been an issue for me or anyone else who has watched my MakeMKV/HB rips with me.

That's not at all to discount what you suffer from, but I guess I would say to someone reading this thread wondering if this is a general issue, that it's not; and if you're particularly sensitive, rip a few and if you don't notice anything amiss, you're not going to notice anything amiss with the next hundred you rip either.

Visually I agree, audio and 3D are different matters in my experience unless I missed a trick somewhere.

I started doing this just before xmas, i've only got about 150 left to go now.
I'm using a program called leawo blurry ripper. its one that gets lots of good reviews. It does what it says on the tin, lots of options and devices supported.

Yep... that's what I do. Queue them up and let it run all night or all day when I'm at work.

The fan in my Pro runs constantly while it's encoding but the machine doesn't miss a beat... 🙂

No difference in audio quality either through my soundbar... I've got a few 3D movies that are at the bottom of the list and will be the last ones I rip.

I actually bought this 3DTV 2 years ago and I think it's safe to say that the 3D is something that really hasn't taken off like people expected... I've watched movies in 3D like 4 times in 2 years...

If the 3D rip isn't satisfactory I'll just rip the 2D version. I honestly don't care either way. 😎

Yes I guess with a sound bar you won't get the full DTS 7.2 experience etc. likewise for 3d there is the side-by-side limitation last time I looked.

I still prefer to just rip them as iso and play them like that.

That's the thing, dude - the same process can sometimes work fine, and sometimes fail. It doesn't necessarily follow that, if one rips and/or transcodes 'Movie X' in a certain way and it runs well, that everything else will run equally well. It's entirely case-by-case.

As you correctly say, a major drag.

I've decided to rip my BR library to clear shelf space. I prefer digital copies anyway in iTunes.

I am using Aurora BR Copy that was included in the purchase of the player. It rips them to ISO and they are 20-45GB in size.

The quality is outstanding... I can't tell the difference from the actual blue ray.

But... is there a better way? I'd like the files to be in the Apple format (MP4? M4V?) where they will be a lot smaller obviously.

Is there better software out there?

Suggestions appreciated!

Rip to MKV with MakeMKV then convert to ATV format. I use iVI Pro; it converts and adds the cover art, film info, etc. There are a number of options to convert th MKV file including Handbrake, VidConvert, both of which I've used. Personally I prefer Vidconvert over HB but HB is free.

Never really cared about the whole home theater thing... I bought the highest rated soundbar in the $500 range (Denon) and called it a day. TV sounds great...

My Panasonic plasma 3DTV makes for a great 3D experience but as said, that's something that just hasn't taken off IMHO. The next TV definitely won't be 3D.

I get that as far as you are concerned. But as you said, you have an unusual sensitivity. It only seems hit and miss from your perspective. 😉

I was just pointing out to the vast, vast majority of people without that sensitivity, they don't have anything to worry about. Like I said, I've literally ripped hundreds of discs using MKV and HB, and it literally has never been an issue to me or any of my friends and family. I exclusively watch my rips on my AppleTV/iOS devices, so I can't speak for other devices. Also, that's strictly US region blurays, if that makes any difference.

But anyway, I feel your pain.

I have a friend with a similar issue. Its not only not a gift but a deficiency in her case. The brain should be able to compensate up to a certain point giving the illusion the audio and video is in sync. That makes in virtually impossible for other people to notice. You might notice people say the beginning of the movie was slightly out of sync but not the end. Nothing actually changed except their brains adjustment for the issue.

I feel for you, my friend I mentioned will literally get migraines if she forces herself to watch something thats out of sync too long. Meanwhile I can't notice it one bit. She finds A LOT of Netflix content to be like that. I don't think we ever tried any of my ripped stuff if the opportunity arises I'll have her check it out.

Yes, streamed content is commonly 'off', as I call it. It doesn't give me headaches so much, though it distracts me terribly - I find myself watching the lips, and waiting for the delay between the sight and the sound of a door being slammed, and getting exceptionally pissed-off about it all. The only way for me to cope with it is to drink - if I'm a bit tipsy, I find I don't mind quite so much...!!!

It is truly the bane of my life. I can't tell you how many times it's prevented me from enjoying myself. If I could get rid of it, I would.

OP

those blurays most likely come with a digital copy you can redeem via iTunes.

While not as great as bluray, will come with iTunes extras in some cases. That will save you ripping/tagging time

I was going to ask you if drinking helped but didn't want to sound degrading or something. I know it helps a little in her case but she doesn't typical drink so when she does the sound will be fine but loses her attention span for watching a movie. Haha
