Hi all,

I have a question for people that have sold Macbooks on Craigslist (or similar). When you sell, do you wipe the Macbook beforehand using Apple's instructions (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201065)? Such that when you present the Macbook to the buyer and power it on for them, is it enough for them to see that the functionality works just from seeing the set up assistant? What if they ask to go more in depth with testing out the functionality i.e. the ports, camera, etc? Is it OK to let them plug in a USB to run some kind of diagnostics? Would appreciate any advice or tips that people have! I've sold on Craigslist a few times before and everytime has been a great experience, just have never sold a computer before. Thanks.

I would never let anyone plug a usb device into your property. You never know what could be on it or what it could do to your device. Most likely nothing but I'd never risk doing that.

You could just wipe the device and set it up as new without an AppleID attached. That would let them explore the entire device without any of your information being on there. Then they could just log in with their AppleID to begin using it.

Thanks, I didn't actually realize you could do that. So essentially it's like the computer is just a guest account? I think that would be perfect to do it like that.

Yeah you can restore it as new and then don't attach an iCloud account to it. That way they can test anything they want on it and none of your personal information is there. I've done it before and it works like a charm.
