Question About The Digital AV Adapter

I have a question about the Apple Digital AV Adapter.

When you plug it to your TV using the HDMI, when the iPad screen locks and turns off does the image on your TV go black then or do you still get an image from the iPad?
 
the tv goes black unfortunately. i wish it could let us lock the iPad screen while watching the tv.
