How, if at all possible, do I make the dock's background transparent or dissapear? I have seen it done on some users screens shots on MR.

Use ClearDock or Transparent Dock.

This question has been asked and answered multiple times over (especially in the monthly Desktop threads and the Show us your Dock thread).
