Hi, I've carried my iPhones naked since the very first one and until now have never dropped one EVER!!

But, yesterday dropped my Blue 15PM and the screen is cracked along with some marks on the Titanium casing where it hit the ground.

I have Applecare on the phone and am in the UK. What is the normal process for repair if I take it to a store...will they only replace the screen and leave the damage/scuffs to the casing or will they normally swap the whole device?

Thanks

Basically it will depend a) the store you take it too B) the mindset of the tech tasked with diagnosing the iphone and C) the mindset of the store manager because depending on the situation of all 3 you could be stung for repair charges of not only the screen but the titanuim frame as well because if the tech is having a bad day they could say that the damage to the frame is having an effect on being able to put in a replacement screen therefore requiring the frame to be replaced before a screen can be replaced.

OR

the damage to the frame could be genuinely preventing a new screen from sitting in the frame properly and therefore require a new frame.

This is on the UK Apple site about Applecare

With AppleCare+, you get repair or replacement coverage for your Apple display which includes unlimited incidents of accidental damage protection, each subject to an excess fee of £79 for screen damage or external enclosure damage, or £229 for other accidental damage.

So it is therefore possible Apple could charge you £79 for a new screen, £79 for new external enclosure and £229 because they found 'other' damage due to the impact of the iphone hitting the ground.

NOTE: If the damage to the external enclosure (basically the frame) is not sufficient enough to prevent a replacement screen from fitting properly Apple should not expect to replace the frame. The problem you will have is if the store you take to their techs saying the frame is damaged sufficiently to prevent a new screen from fitting properly. You will then have to either agree with their diagnosis or disagree with it and take it to a 3rd party repair place.

Use express replacement. They'll send you a refurbished replacement and you'll just have to return your phone within 10 days. Also they'll put a charge on your credit card/debit card until they receive your damaged phone

No, that's not possible. The charge is either £79 or £229 - if it doesn't qualify for £79 repair it'll be just £229 even if the whole phone is replaced.

What is the £229 fee for if the person already has AppleCare? On the website it says £79 for accidental damage so I would assume that covers everything?
There’s screen or back damage, at one fee, or “other” damage (e.g. liquid) at a higher fee. But you’re right, £79 is actually the HIGHER fee - it’s only £25 for screen damage. So the two fee possibilities are either £25 or £79, not 79 or 229. My mistake, I don’t live in UK so didn’t realize the error.
