Question about unlock and roaming

Hi,
I'm from Belgium and planning to buy an iPhone next week when travelling to NYC. Of course I need to unlock it to use back home (as soon as 1.1.1 unlock is out) but because I just can't wait to use it, I was wondering if it would be any problem for me to unlock it while still in the US, and therefore roaming with it (maybe on AT&T) right away instead of using my home network... Any ideas/infos/previous experiences??
