okay, i know someone that has a iphone 5 on att. My question is, can they use their upgrade to get another iphone5 and unlock it to use on tmobile without any problems from att? If not, can they unlock their old iphone 5 instead?

not unless they pay full price. if they upgrade to an iphone 5 and give away that old one, they can request an upgrade for that old one. not the new one.

unlocking options:

you can use a thurd party site such as chronicunlocks.com. this is a permanend unlock.

or go on amazon and look for a gpp unlocking sim. this is a permanent unlock as long as you remain on the gpp supported ios version.
