As long as you have internet on the laptop I don't see why not.

I was looking for an answer to exactly the same question.

If I download and update from my laptop does the update remove music, video, texts already on the phone?

I know no-one can say for definite until it is released, but can anyone remember how it worked with 1.1.4 etc.

none of the previous updates removed stuff.. I would say that the upgrade would work fine.. but don't forget you have to upgrade via itunes which will backup your phone for you anyway before the upgrade.

I guess the worst case scenario is that I would get a 2.0 iPhone for a couple of days without music. I'm a stupid enough early adopter to think that's a great deal!

Don't you sync contacts, etc. across machines?

I've got .Mac syncing calendars, contacts, etc. between machines, so even if I lost everything, I could set up a sync and get them all back on my phone until I got home and could restore from a backup.

Wouldn't it be possible to sort out syncing, via Google perhaps, or even an export/import via a USB key, on your machine. That way you would have the security of knowing the data is there if the 2.0 update did wipe the phone.

(Isn't it bizarre that we obsess so much we have to have the new software immediately, I'm going to be on holiday and would only have to wait 48 hours until I'm home but just know I wouldn't be able to!)

I'm a Mac user so can't really offer any advice on syncing for a PC, other than Google Calendar or exporting from whatever software you use on your desktop and then re-importing on your laptop.

Erm, I believe you are saying that you don't use your laptop as the machine you usually sync your iPhone too. Even so, you can install the update, but it might wipe out everything. Don't worry about that, though, you can just connect your iPhone back to the computer that you set up your iPhone to sync with and you will get everything back and up to date.

    V2/V1 backwards compatibility

    Hi,

    Quick question:

Im going to be getting a V1 iphone from a friend (long story to why im not going to go for the new version!). It will be running 1.1.4 (non jail broken) so im going to do an official update to 2.0. But, im probably going to be living in OZ next year so is it possible to then downgrade back to 1.1.4 so i can jail break it to then work on one the Australian networks, or will i have to hope and cross my fingers by early next year we'll have a cracked 2.0?

Possibly... I don't know if version 2.0 has any restrictions on going back to the earlier FW.. however you will have to have a local copy of 1.1.4 as it's stop being on the Apple site after next Friday!

    2.0 upgrade/activation without Sim card

Hi, I have a different question along these lines. I will be overseas in Paris when the 2.0 software is released. To avoid any problems with roaming charges, I popped out my Sim and left it at home. Is anyone aware if I will be able to update the iPhone to 2.0 without the Sim card, or should I wait a few weeks until I am home? I seem to remember needing to reactivate the phone after previous updates. I am not looking to unlock/jailbreak or anything. Thanks for any help!
