My girlfriend has mentioned getting me an iPhone 5 as a Christmas present, but my line is not eligible for an upgrade until next March. We share a plan and her line is eligible for an upgrade, however. I know it's possible to swap the phone between lines post purchase, but my question is: Is it possible to get the eligibility swapped to my line before the phone is purchased? I'd like to, if possible, activate the phone on Christmas day - I'm assuming AT&T's customer service reps would be off that day.

Just trim your sim down and throw it into the 5 and enjoy. Later contact att and have that phone taken off her account and placed on yours. Not sure you can transfer someone elses upgrade to your account before the purchase. If that was the case I would pay someone to transfer their update to my account every month and make bank on buying low and selling high!

I upgraded mine on a different line. Ordered it through AT&T on the phone and told them what I wanted to do. The phone arrived at my door and I again called to activate it. There is a option when you call in to activate to do it on another line. No problems at all.

You are NOT swapping eligibility. She is doing an upgrade. After that happens, you are swapping phones. People do this all the time. Just talk to ATT.

Keep in mind that she will not be able to upgrade or get a discounted phone for some about 2 years.

I appreciate the replies. I may not have been as clear as I thought, though. The reason I wanted to know if the eligibility could be moved to my line is because when I get the phone on Christmas day, I'm assuming I won't be able to get it swapped until at least the day after - surely the customer service reps get Christmas off, right?

If that's not possible, would putting my iPhone 4's sim in the iPhone 5 mess anything up? I could do that and then get the phone registered to my line later on.

You can do the physical upgrade swap, but not eligibility swap.

I do not know if they get Christmas off. You can call and ask.

Alternatively you can have her activate the phone on her line first and you put your own sim card in. HOWEVER, she would not have a phone to use unless you also get a nano-SIM -> micro/normal SIM adapter for her to use with her current phone.

Ah, I see. I didn't know the new iPhones used a different sim. We will probably just get the phone activated the day after Christmas (if we can't get it done the day of). We could get the phone a few days before, but I'd lose out on opening the box Christmas day!

They WILL be closed on Christmas. Bet on it!
